Another COVID exposure for family members. I’m too severe to get COVID, im barely keeping my ability to use my phone.

Can someone who has more knowledge/energy than me tell me if this HEPA purifier looks good or not?

The Levoit air purifier combines innovative air purification technology with aromatherapy for a fresh and relaxing indoor environment. Equipped with an advanced HEPA filter, it removes particles as small as 0.3 µm from the air, making it an ideal choice for allergy sufferers and pet owners. The device operates with an energy efficiency of only 7 watts and is Energy Star certified, allowing for cost-effective and environmentally friendly use. With a noise level of 25 dB, the air purifier ensures undisturbed peace even in bedrooms. The button controls make it easy to switch between the three speed settings and check the filter status. Additionally, the air purifier features an aroma function, creating a fragrant atmosphere by adding a few drops of essential oils. It is recommended to replace the filter every 4 to 6 months to maintain high air purification performance.

or for a higher CADR maybe the “BlueAir Joy S”?

How large is your space? If possible you should aim for a CADR so that the air is cleaned at least 5-8 times an hour.

Unfortunately many of the products do not have information on the sound level for their various fan settings. We have two large units (recommended for rooms 4x the size) in our apartment so that they can be kept on the lowest setting while still cleaning the space, as I am particularly sensitive to sound.

It depends. My choice is either just my room (but would have to be very silent I get pem so easily from noise, i cant even listen to people speak anymore) which is probably like < 15 m2.

Or the whole floor which is maybe 30 m2.

The two products I listed both had minimum sounds of around 20 db which is why i shortlisted them. But I assume the CADR on minimum setting is tiny…

Back when researching air purifiers, it seemed Coway had one of the best reputations for more budget-friendly options, so I got their AirMega 150.

I always have it on high and it's very loud, so it's in another room. Even a bit of an annoying sound on the lowest setting.

I can at least say that it actually reduces particles in the air, since I bought an air quality sensor to test it, and it brought the PM 2.5 count almost to nothing when on high (that was in a bedroom with the door closed, less so when placed in another room).

I don’t know what’s available in your area, but both phillips and electrolux have units with sound <20 dB. We have an electrolux pure a9, and it is the most quiet I’ve found on paper at least. I can tolerate it on half of maximum speed unless I’m exhausted or in PEM. The lowest setting is 17db, I haven’t measured the others. In contrast we have an old blue air that is silent on low, but impossible to turn up as the noise level skyrockets. The electrolux also has a better CADR.

It’s also possible to have multiple small units so that they can be kept on a low setting to reduce sound.

Disclaimer: I have NO clue about this topic but judging from my quick research, this seems to be a really crucial factor.

Also, maybe someone more knowledgeable can chime in about far-UVC:

From what I understand, that’s a very quiet and efficient technology. Maybe worth to consider as a second security layer?
This is one of the products I saw recommended: https://www.nukit222.com/

We have the uv torches from nukit, they are silent but have a slight «electrical» buzzing sound that at least to me is very tiring. I’m not sure how close I have to be to hear it, but when we use them we space them out so a unit is typically ~2m or more from me

We have another unit from beacon that has a similar sound (and even worse when it loses wifi connection which is all the time. I can’t recommend them despite the product looking good on paper. We have their first version, so things may have improved for the second version, but I haven’t been happy with the company when it comes to information or support so the non-recommendation is for that as well as the product itself).
