Article: Why I injected myself with an untested gene therapy (BBC news about biohacking)

Teaser quote if anybody wants to figure if it's worth clicking through
The moment Tristan Roberts became the first human to inject an untested, experimental gene therapy into his stomach fat, he was sitting on a leather couch in his friend-slash-yoga instructor's living room, not on a doctor's examining table.

The glass coffee table in front of him was strewn with syringes. A Chihuahua mix wearing an inflatable recovery collar snored beside him.

The event was livestreamed on Facebook, and hundreds tuned in (later, Roberts' mother watched, though she was "not thrilled" with his decision). On Roberts' right was Aaron Traywick, head of Ascendance Biomedical, the nascent company behind the treatment. A network of unnamed researchers around the US assembled the vials in front of them.

"We do not advise that anyone watching this video do what is about to be done here," said Traywick, who is not a scientist and identifies primarily as a "community organiser".

"Tristan Roberts is completely within his rights according to the FDA and the rule of law in this nation… to self-experiment on himself in any way that he deems medically appropriate. It is his body and it is his right."

He's not the only one:
Josiah Zayner is the first person known to have edited his own DNA and he showed the world just how easy it is to do, live-streaming the process on his blog, "Science, Art, Beauty". Zayner claims this was the second time he has genetically modified himself.

Using CRISPR, a relatively new gene-editing technique, he removed the protein Myostatin from an area in his forearm. Myostatin inhibits muscle growth so he should, at least in theory, notice an increase in muscle mass in this area after the experiment.

At first read, I thought Chihuahua cells were being implanted in the kid or the Chihuahua was getting injected.

I probably should have put this in the Classic ME Moments or Misheard/Misread forum, but I couldn’t be bothered. :D
I'm looking for the M.E. Moments thread on PR, or here, and can't find it anywhere. Is it my brain or is it gone?
Miss it.

I am too lazy to figure out what untested gene therapies I would like to have myself injected with(obviously one that ends my CFS/ME).Can I also improve my appearance?get thin(ner)?make wrinkles go away?It wasn't that hard to come up with ideas.

I'd quite like the untested gene therapy shown at the beginning of prometheus, the one that not only unravels and rewrites my DNA but also destroys an entire planetary ecosystem.

I mean yes it looks like it may smart a bit, but the whole kill everything else on the planet thing - take that evolution, maybe next time you could evolve a plan that didn't require my life to be completely f'd up.

Anthropomorphism, gotta love it, it's just such a useful thing if insane motivation is required, such a good tool for justifying hatred in an indifferent universe ;)

Interesting article.

From a scientific view: Why should something change in one's genome/mtRNA or so when a small amount of DNA is injected once? Would the reapeated injection of DNA change the outcome?
