Coping with heat

Day 1 of summer heatwave today. And to be honest, if this continues all summer I’m probably going back to my worst baseline wise… Today absolutely thrashed me.

Has anyone tried phase change material (~15 C) Cooling packs. Looks like something that might be worthwhile?

It sucks because I’m alone at home most of the day and can’t leave my bed so I can’t refill ice packs or something, but the phase change material things sound like they last pretty long cool. And generally sound far more comfortable than ice packs.

I use the phase change migraine hats and they don't unfortunately last very long. You would need a lot of this material to make something that lasted a long time.

I equally struggle with the heat at the moment, it wipes me out completely. Unfortunately AC only really works when its a lot hotter and then I don't have a choice for the portable AC to run (and assault the senses with noise).

The only other thing I can potentially suggest is the heat pump based air cooled vests. Then its power providing the cooling and they do last several hours and can be quite effective, they just aren't cheap.

Would it be possible to have a tiny fridge next to your bed where you put cooling packs in?

Oh and I see there are mini freezers too

However not a cheap option

I was warned not to have reflective foil inside my window in case it overheated the glass and cracked it, so another reason to do this on the outside, not the inside.
So I stopped covering the inside of my windows with aluminum foil because I discovered it creates a green house effect INSIDE my apartment :nailbiting:

I've now added white card board instead to reflect the sun with a big black bold "Cracker Barrel" sign on it from when I ordered stuff online. I hope my neighbours across the street don't get upset.

If I could just find the energy I would like to make a migraine cap that is water cooled, then I could cool the water with fans to the air and get a nice chilled cap for as long as I want to run it. I saw someone do a similar thing converting a T shirt with water piping for computers and using a cooler with ice water in it which gave several hours of cooling with just a pump in addition. Both are quite significant DIY projects for someone with our condition but its the sort of thing I wish just existing commercially that we could use for surviving the heat of summer.

I think we should just all move into Hobbiton, underground homes all on one level with nice even temperatures, not too cold, not too hot. And Hobbits tended to have plenty of nice food and pretty gardens too.

Sorry not very practical… but I can recommend the good quiet fans you can get. I splashed out on a duux whisper and with a window open I can have it running overnight helping push cool air over me which helps.

I’ve fantasised about this. In fact as a very severe person who can’t tolerate light or noise my dream home may be a bunker.

Ironically, our appartment building does have a nuclear bunker. (Legal requirement here for all buildings built during the cold war). But I cant just move in ahha

How long have you found it to last for you?

The marketing seems to suggest a couple hours. (Which is longer than ice). But I assume it’s a safe bet given your experience the marketing is quite exaggerated?

I’d go for a bunker. The Hobbit hole is just a slightly fluffier version. But I’ve fantasised about both for years too. Maybe one day…

I got one. Really helps for 5 minutes. but then its as warm as my body. so its kinda counterproductive until it cools down again…
That's disappointing, sorry it didn't work more for you. When I sleep on top of one during the summer it usually lasts me longer than that. I think the material on the other side of the mat actually matters quite a bit, since the mat works by taking your body heat and redistributing it to the other surface. If the other surface is very insulative, that might just create a heat sink instead of dispersing heat across something like a hardwood floor.

I have a mattress with a gel top layer for cooling (though it's usually not enough to create a significant cooling effect on its own). But I wonder if that might make the difference between your experience and mine

10 to 15 minutes for the better one I have from MyHalos. The cheaper one is less material and lasts less than 10 minutes.
