Dr Björn Bragée and the Bragée ME-center in Stockholm, Sweden

Bragée Clinics are apparently supporting unevidenced treatments for ME. Not sure how else to interpret the fact that Björn Bragée is featured in a campaign video by FSI, and this article published on their webpage:

FSI about their petition:
FSI auto-translate said:
FSI will shortly write to the National Board of Health and Welfare and other interested parties expressing our concerns about the care of patients with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) and post-covid. In a rather extensive document with various sources, we will convey that patients require individualised treatment based on medical history and symptoms rather than biomarkers. Despite the lack of evidence-based treatments for the group, clinical experience and smaller studies have shown positive effects of some treatments for many patients.

The letter emphasises the importance of not being limited to efficacy studies. Furthermore, that treatments based on clinical experience should be considered more for these diseases. For example, we mention treatments such as low-dose Naltrexone, B12 injections, IVIg and Valganciclovir, all of which have shown positive effects in large subgroups.

What is FSI?

That looks like a lot of misinformation.
The Association for Difficult-to-Diagnose Infectious Diseases, a (problematic) patient organisation for ME, post-covid, post lyme and other vector born diseases, fibromyalgia etc.

Yes. Evidence, facts and patient safety are sadly not among their priorities, it seems. They are big on promoting experimental stuff, speculative hypotheses, private clinics, commercial products like supplements etc. And they are very hostile and aggressive towards those who don't agree with them.

RME (the Swedish ME Association) often collaborates with FSI, which unfortunately has given FSI quite a lot of influence.

For what it's worth, a new blog article on bragee.se explaining sensitization in relation to pain.

When the nervous system is out of balance: Pain that spreads

[...] The brain's main task is to protect us from danger

The brain is the 'boss' with two 'assistants' who carry out the boss's orders in the body. One worker is the sympathetic nervous system, which we can call the 'body activist' because it stretches its nerve pathways through the body and increases the activity of breathing, of the bloodstream, the tension of the muscles that must be ready if it becomes necessary to flee or fight for protection.

The second collaborator is the parasympathetic nervous system, the 'body relaxer', which steps in when the brain thinks the danger is over. It dampens the activity and ensures that the body comes back into balance, that you can eat, digest food and sleep. It has a star player called the vagus, which extends between the brain and the organs of the body.

These two nervous systems make up the autonomic nervous system, and this is where imbalances occur when problems arise.

So why do you get pain?

The brain monitors everything that is going on and predicts what is going to happen based on previous experience. If you have had pain in the past when stressed by a certain cause, it will come again with every similar stress that the brain has in its statistics. It gives you a pain signal that means "stay alert!". Pain signals are the brain's important warning tools.

If the brain believes that you have been exposed to something dangerous for a long time, then the body activist can continue to work at full speed, the brain does not call in the body relaxer in the usual way. And now the brain goes into overdrive and starts over-interpreting even quite innocent stress and activates the pain. You may have difficulty sleeping and getting proper rest. The brain and nervous system are sensitised, extra-sensitive, as they say. [...]

"And now the brain goes into overdrive and starts over-interpreting even quite innocent stress and activates the pain"

I've seen this kind of statement a lot but never any indication of what is actually going on. Are there any proposed mechanisms by which signals are over-interpreted? Why would the same signal be interpreted differently at different times?

After making the decision to close ME-center early, Bragée is opening a private primary care clinic in Östermalm, Stockholm, the week after next (phones open this Monday).

At the bottom of the page announcing the opening of this new clinic, there's this note:

PS For patients who have previously visited our specialist clinics for rehab, pain and ME/CFS, a warm welcome, we are very used to helping with such complaints, but note that we provide primary care and cannot prescribe such special drugs or special treatments that belong to specialist care. We work on behalf of Region Stockholm and follow their guidelines. We also welcome patients from other regions.
A wee bit of context, for those of you not familiar with Stockholm: according to Wikipedia Östermalm is "an extremely expensive area, having the highest housing prices in Sweden.", while VisitStockholm describes it as follows "At upscale Östermalm you'll find beautiful architecture, fascinating museums, and classic theater stages. [...] Östermalm is known for high-end shopping, fine dining restaurants, posh bars and nightclubs, and venerated cultural institutions. No wonder then, that 'Östermalm' has become short-hand for luxury, glamour, and affluence. The streets of Biblioteksstan for example are a must for anyone who's looking for exclusive fashion and design brands."
