RNZ Long Covid and ME/CFs are the same illness, researcher says

    quote:
Long Covid and ME/CFS (formerly known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) are effectively the same illness, according to a University of Otago researcher.

Emeritus Professor Warren Tate leads a team at the University of Otago's Department of Biochemistry that has been examining the similarities in the molecular patterns of long Covid and ME/CFS patients.

Tate told Nine to Noon these similarities were so great that it was “a travesty of justice” that people with the illnesses were treated differently.

    From the Washington Post:

For covid long-haulers, the pandemic is far from over

The end of the public health emergency leaves many fearful they will be forgotten

I haven't read the whole thing yet but here are two quotes.

This section mentions Millions Missing event at the Washington Monument -

EDIT - * I don't remember seeing the phrase "Still here, still sick" but I could have missed that. I just looked closer and saw that this phrase was written on the red blankets draped across the cots.

A different phrase - "Still sick, still fighting" - was seen on t-shirts and pillowcases and was also a common hashtag.

This section has a quote from Emily Taylor from Solve M.E. -

[Moderators - please move if this goes too much off topic. Thanks!]
I'm not trying to pick on Emily Taylor, or disagree with her comment.

But does anyone have a source for that claim about recovery rate dropping after four years?

So...today we learned that in America they're testing an antibody drug and in Britain they're testing breaks from sitting? Talk about a microcosm of LC research.

Re BBC R4's News Quiz mentioned earlier in the thread, sufficient complaints to the Feedback programme on the same station sometimes forces someone from further up the hierarchy to respond.

A very popular torrent website, rarbg has just shut down. This is what you can read on the website now about the reasons:

    Hello guys,
We would like to inform you that we have decided to shut down our site.
The past 2 years have been very difficult for us - some of the people in our team died due to covid complications,
others still suffer the side effects of it - not being able to work at all.
Some are also fighting the war in Europe - ON BOTH SIDES.
Also, the power price increase in data centers in Europe hit us pretty hard.
Inflation makes our daily expenses impossible to bare.
Therefore we can no longer run this site without massive expenses that we can no longer cover out of pocket.
After an unanimous vote we've decided that we can no longer do it.
    We are sorry :(
    Bye

Hubs for exchanging unlicensed media content, especially films and music. They represent a certain amount of legal risk and very little reward for the administrators, who are predominantly enthusiast/activist types. It’s therefore not unusual for torrent sites to disappear from time to time.

Basically, this was one of the largest internet pirate websites you could find.

True, but torrenting itself is a very efficient and low cost way of transferring files, including legal ones. It is used by legit operations all the time. Linux OS distributions, and a lot of archive.org content, for example, are available via torrents.

News Quiz has been a favourite programme of mine for many years. When i went to listen to it last night on iplayer, i couldnt believe my ears. It actually really upset me i never expected to be mocked from that source, i thought i was at least safe on the News Quiz.

I'd already been thinking it just not very funny any more, but that was the last straw for me. I must admit to having a moment of intensely hoping he gets it, then he'll be 'laughing on the other side of his face', as my mother would have said. Not very Christian of me but there we are, I'm sick of our suffering being a punch line.

Bring back Toksvig & Hardy, who used to make me laugh out loud every week

Quoting for truth. I stopped listening after that era - it's been a shadow of its former self to put it kindly. My wife and I used to look forward every week and eagerly await its return from its regular hiatus.

ETA Honestly some of the best days of the before times were dropping mooring lines, motoring out, getting the sails up and settling down to the sound of lapping water, Sandi's commentaries and Jeremy's rants.
