Abstract
Background
Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a severe multisystemic disease with a broad spectrum of symptoms. Little is known about the development of symptoms during the course of the disease. Objective
The aim of this study was therefore to investigate possible changes in the frequency of symptoms during the course of ME/CFS.Methods
As part of the APAV-ME/CFS study, the responses of 749 adult, medically diagnosed ME/CFS patients (> 20 years; 608 women, 138 men) were statistically analyzed. The respondents were recruited through self-activation and according to the snowball principle. After the statistical description of the values, an analysis of variance and a logistic regression analysis were carried out. Results
There was a significant correlation between the number of symptoms reported and the sex of the participants. Men reported fewer symptoms than women. For most symptoms, there was no significant correlation between the frequency of reporting and the duration of the illness. One exception was the symptom of (food) intolerance. In women, the probability of this increased significantly in the early course of the disease, but not in men. There were indications of a parallel occurrence of gastrointestinal problems. Conclusion
For diagnosis, it is important to know that most ME/CFS symptoms occur independently of the duration of the disease. However, the results suggest that some symptoms only develop in the first few years of the disease, depending on sex. The parallel occurrence of gastrointestinal problems and (food) intolerances suggests that there may be clusters of symptoms that could differ with respect to sex and disease duration. Such symptom clusters could later be related to known pathophysiological correlations in order to develop sex-appropriate preventive approaches.====
