Poem about chronic illness

I remembered a poem I wrote 2 years ago about loss of health that I never posted on here.

Heavily influenced by the fact that I’d been through a romantic relationship break-up and had been listening to a lot of break up music. “All too well” and “never ever getting back together” are both Taylor Swift song titles, “the one who got away” is a Katy Perry song, “we could have been so good together” is a line from George Michael’s Careless Whisper.

Clichés

“i wish you’d stayed”
“we could have been so good together”
blah blah blah.

I hate the clichés, but they’re all true
My life has stopped since I lost you
Stagnated, suspended, stalled, slowed.

Life without you is kinda hell
‘Cause I remember all too well
What it was to be together with you.

I remember the feel of you
Decadent, passionate, real and true
But memories feel less real of late.

I’m sorry I took you for granted
Assumed that we’d never be parted -
Is that why you left me?

Please take me back, I’ll appreciate you
this time; is there nothing I can do
to bring you back home to me?

We moved through life, a partnership
I can’t believe I lost my grip
On something so precious and holy.

Now I must learn to cope without
you, as it seems there is no doubt
that we will not reunite soon.

If science can fix things, maybe one day
You won’t be “the one who got away”
But until then I must endure.

But we might be never ever
ever getting back together
There’s no guarantees in research.

So where does that leave me and my broken heart
It’s been almost a decade apart
Please come back, come back to me.
