To me it doesn't matter if he did the actual selection. He's in charge. He should set the direction.

It all feels rather Afmeish to me. It isn't wholly fair to blame the speaker. More a question for the organiser and her supervisor.

The speaker is 100% responsible for what they said

Fair point. I guess my reasoning was that the only reason to allow juniors to stand up and talk is if they have some new data from their research to present - in which case they should have the chance to communicate it. There is never any reason to ask juniors to get up and give a review of the status quo because they cannot have enough experience to have a balanced perspective. Older presenters may also not have a balanced perspective but at least they might have done!

I think it is entirely fair to blame speakers for thinking they have a perspective they do not. One of the biggest problems of modern education policy is to encourage youngsters to give talks as if they were experts. That leads on to talking down to patients as if they were experts. And there comes a point in life - pretty early on - when one has to take responsibility for ones own arrogance.

Edit: One should also take responsibility for being more verbose than Nellie.

For me it is not so much an issue of people saying things like this. We all have to learn. What is wrong with that meeting is that nobody senior quietly and subtly points out in questions that the speaker has just made an arsehole of themselves by talking through their trousers.

I'll shut up then. One cannot put a benign interpretation on that.

Thanks for clarifying that little misunderstanding.

Of course we plebs have no way of knowing whether anyone actually asked any questions because of the format. It is highly unsatisfactory.

But I don't see any posts by Phil that reflect any information sharing from what's going on possibly except to a direct question. I would very much like a liaison that kept us in the loop as to what might be worth knowing about what the CMRC is up to. Now that I write it I don't even know specifically what I'm referring to. I'm not meaning the relaying of gossip but helping us to get a sense of the general tone and specific details of what might be news from that front.

Maybe there's nothing to report and I'm clutching at straws for information. I just feel it's still all very opaque.

    I don't think Rachel.

How about just leaving it there.
