The post
The College wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support the work of Dr Siobhan O’Dwyer. This GW4-funded post is available for 2.5 days per week from 1st June to 30th November 2021. The successful applicant will support the development of research on family carers of people with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS).

The post will include recruiting and conducting consultations with carers, patients, and professionals; scoping the extant literature; (where appropriate) preparing manuscripts and grant applications; and, coordinating and hosting online team workshops. Where appropriate, the post may also include contributing to the supervision of undergraduate dissertation students.

About you
The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information orally, in writing, and electronically, and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD (or be nearing completion) or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study, and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes. Applicants will be highly organised; have excellent written and verbal communication skills; be able to manage research and administrative activities and deadlines; and be able to liaise with a variety of stakeholders. Knowledge of ME/CFS, previous experience working with family carers or vulnerable patients, and experience conducting research or Patient & Public Involvement via online platforms such as Teams or Zoom, are desirable but not essential.

Dr Siobhan O'Dwyer
Senior Lecturer (Ageing & Family Care)

Overview
I am a Senior Lecturer in Ageing and Family Care. I grew up in Australia and am indebted to the Yuggera and Ngunnawal people, on whose land I lived and worked before moving to the UK.

My research focuses on the wellbeing of family carers and older adults, with particular emphasis on (1) suicide, homicide & self-harm and (2) the development & evaluation of psychosocial interventions. This research is: international and interdisciplinary; conducted in collaboration with carers, service providers, and community organisations; and, underpinned by a personal commitment to doing research on care in a way that is itself caring.

My research has also received extensive media coverage, led to changes in practice and policy, and informed the play Yielding (shortlisted for Best New Australian Work in 2019) and the large-scale animated light projection The Invisible Carer.

I teach on the Medical Sciences Programme. I am the Pathway Lead for Health Research and lead undergraduate modules on research methods and ethics. Thanks to nominations from my wonderful students, I won the Research Inspired Teaching Award at the University of Exeter Students' Guild Teaching Awards in 2019 and the Inspirational Leader Award at the College of Medicine and Health Staff Aureus Awards in 2020.

after reading that i see what the problem is short term post for overachievers who but a failure would want such a post .

This could be useful if they assess the looming double social care impact of elderly parents caring for PWME.

I think its interestin that she was working at Griffith University in australia until 2016 where I think they have biomedical ME research (although it tends to be over hyped) so perhaps she will come at ME with a more realistic approach than researchers from the UK.
