In our world, a lot of the money going into medical research comes from private charities run by extremely wealthy people. Since news related to these charities usually don’t warrant their own thread, I’m creating this catch-all one.

There has been a little talk in the ME/LC community in creating a project to pitch to Melinda Gates’ charity, Pivotal Ventures. Whitney Dafoe also tried to pitch Elon Musk to invest into ME/CFS.
 
Warren Buffet was great at making money—not so good at giving it away.


Between the lines: Buffett's three children don't make for natural charitable bedfellows.

  • Susie, 71, runs the Sherwood Foundation, which is focused on Nebraska.
  • Peter, 66, runs the NoVo Foundation, which "supports initiatives that promote a holistic, interconnected and healing vision for humanity," especially in the small town of Kingston, NY.
  • Howie, 69, runs the Howard G Buffett Foundation, whose home page features a lot of armed soldiers. He has also spent a lot of time and money arming — and patrolling with — the border policein Cochise County, Arizona.
The intrigue: Buffett has charged his children with "responding to any future changes to the laws governing taxes and foundations" — but has seemingly given them little if any guidance on the giving-money-away part of their new job.

Give their interests, and that the article mentions they are the ones who will unanimously decide what the money goes into, I’m guessing not much will be spent on health unfortunately.

I’d wager it’ll mostly go into border security and rural infrastructure or something.

yes i think if you look at the overall picture of reasons to give/where money is directed, we humans usually all give to causes that have actually touched us personally - ie significantly negatively impacted us, or people we love. I dont think billionaire humans are any different than poor ones in that regard.

so we await, Elon, Buffet, Gates etc either getting ME/CFS/LC themselves or someone they love doing so - and, crucially, NOT appearing to be significantly helped by the quackery or unproven treatments given by private Drs.

Its the 'no help, no treatment, etc' that tends to move people i think.

I turn seventy in the next six months and since I have everything I could possibly need, especially my family, I am really excited to be on the following mission for the next twenty years! Besides, I think you grow old when you retire and not retire when when you grow old. Seen such rapid decline in so many of my cohort once they retire!

Obviously a business focused video but he has his finger on the pulse of ME/CFS research and is one of the most knowledgeable people about the disease. In public I've not seen much mention of his funding of research but you see the evidence in the funding section of quite a number of ME/CFS papers.

If there is a break through lab finding that @Jonathan Edwards talks about I'm sure Vinod Khosla would love to hear about it and the plans to move it forward asap.

In the spirit of this thread I've loosely followed the OMF financial findings and a large portion of the funds come from a number of anonymous donors, some of which specify how the money is to be spent. We don't get to hear about those people either.
