I can't hit like for this, but I saw this earlier. I can hope he makes a speedy recovery, and that his experience gives him a deeper understanding of the crisis, which leads to wiser action.

Hopefully he survives and begins to see illness and disability differently.

Or... As with many people with his attitude.. He could go the other way and come out of this with the attitude of 'I beat this deadly disease, so you can do the same with yours!'

I've seen that happen a few times :cautious:

I have faith in you Boris, that you will emerge from this a more compassionate human being. Okay maybe not faith so much, more a slightly pessimistic hope

They say Boris Johnson is getting standard oxygen, not invasive ventilation and he doesn't have pneumonia.

Does somebody know: Why do you need oxygen without pneumonia? Can an infected heart or weakend torso muscles make that necessary?

So far I've thought you'd be "safe" from the need of oxygen without pneumonia.

Oxygen may be needed to keep levels in the blood up if the heart is failing or respiratory force is very weak but in this context it seems very unlikely that a need for oxygen would be other than lung pathology. Perhaps oxygen is being given just in case.

I understood one of the symptoms is 'breathlessness'. A friend was in hospital with it and has pneumonia and was on oxygen and also she mentioned a nebuliser. She wasn't ventilated and is now home recovering.

That says quite a bit about prevailing attitudes to illness. So what about the people who didn't 'pull through'? They didn't fight? They weren't sufficiently responsible to want to get back to making their contribution to society? They found the secondary benefits of, erm, death, too attractive?

Dr. Ian Lipkin appeared today on a business news program which had some technical difficulties. Of his infection with the virus, Lipkin said he was "out of the end of the tunnel" and doing well (with a bit of a cough). He also spoke about the medical community being very creative in terms of investigating drugs for repurposing against the illness, and that this was being done at "warp speed." He also endorsed social distancing and wished it was being uniformly applied across the US (some states are not enforcing it).

I mainly post this as an update on Dr. Lipkin's status vis-a-vis Covid-19.

Title : The last thing we need to hear right now is that Boris Johnson will defeat coronavirus because he's a 'fighter'

    Link : https://www.independent.co.uk/voice...avirus-icu-dominic-raab-fighter-a9455756.html

    Article continues : https://www.independent.co.uk/voice...avirus-icu-dominic-raab-fighter-a9455756.html

I agree with this article. The idea that people who don't get ill are virtuous and deserving, that people who do get ill somehow brought it on themselves and deserve everything they get, and that people who survive a serious illness are somehow "better" than those who don't, has always infuriated me.

Several of the comments annoy me as well, particularly those which seem to be suggesting that mind over matter and the placebo effect helps to keep people alive and well.

Warning to those who might want to watch - the host calls the novel coronavirus, aka, SARS-CoV-2, "the Wuhan virus" within the first 10 seconds.

I had to stop watching at that point. Language like "Wuhan virus" or "Chinese virus" may have been okay back before the virus was identified and named. But now it only feeds into violence against folks with any Asian heritage.

This is not directed at you, @Forbin - thanks for posting the link.
