Abstract

Purpose

Long-standing symptoms have been reported after COVID-19 infection, which can negatively impact daily life and work. The purpose of this study was therefore to describe work ability and explore factors associated with poor work ability among individuals with Post COVID-19 Condition (PCC).

Methods

We did an online survey among individuals with self-reported PCC. Descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to explore relationships between different factors associated with poor work ability.

Results

A total of 608 individuals answered the survey (mean age 47.3 years (SD 9.9), 87% women). The majority (85%) had not been hospitalized on account of a COVID-19 infection. Work ability was experienced as poor among 51%, but only 18% were on sick leave. In the final logistic regression model of four variables (Nagelkerke R Square 0.538, p < 0.001), mental fatigue was the most important factor for perceived poor work ability (Odds ratio 1.176; CI 95%: 1.123–1.232 p < 0.001, Nagelkerke R Square 0.406). Higher levels of dependency in Activities of Daily Living (ADL), greater physical fatigue, and impaired balance were also associated with self-reported poor work ability.

Conclusion

Perceived poor work ability is common among people with PCC. Several factors are associated with poor work ability in this population whereof mental fatigue seems to be strongest. Given the complexity of these conditions and the consequences in everyday life, it is crucial to implement individually tailored interventions.

Cidrap Many with long COVID remain on the job despite reduced ability to work

quotes:
Eighty-three percent experienced mental fatigue, and 86% experienced physical fatigue. Dizziness was reported by 83%, and 55% reported balance disturbances. Most respondents reported that they did not need extra help with everyday life tasks, and their physical strength was generally good.

“In the present study, mental fatigue was the strongest associated factor with poor work ability,” note the authors. The finding is in line with previous studies that showed that fatigue is strongly associated with reduced work ability and delayed return to work.

While there is limited evidence for how to treat fatigue in people with PCC, the authors note that mindfulness exercises and pulmonary rehabilitation are promising interventions. And because fatigue is common in the general population, especially among women, the researchers argue that special attention should be paid to the sex distribution when interpreting fatigue levels in people with long COVID.

I don't understand how this became standard. The ideal case would obviously be to figure out the root cause and have universally effective drug treatments. When did this whole shift even occur? Having to do personally tailored in-person extensive treatment is literally the worst case scenario. It's massively expensive, it literally scales backwards, the more of it, the bigger the infrastructure you need and you get zero economy of scale.

It's as if medicine looked at its incredible wealth of life-saving drugs and just scoffs at the concept of more, would rather the rest be all about doing ritual manipulations and coaching. There's just no ambition anymore outside of a few areas.

Everything else is basically built around this "back to artisan work because industrial productivity is bad". To me it feels exactly like the weird "trad" influencers, who pretend that living like the old days, before modern convenience, was sooo much better, when most of it pretty much involved living in filth and hunger all the damn time.

This is just slop. None of this is promising and it's the literally been the dominant standard for decades despite not working. It's not even plausible, it's pure magical thinking.
