We’ve discussed the idea that AI will lead to a crisis for the discipline and careers in mathematics. That the value comes from understanding not from the solutions. What happens when these longstanding and interesting problems are all solved?
But could there be a Jevons paradox of sorts. We...
As someone who has actually had to make these decisions do you have any thoughts on what the approach should be here? Is there any informed approach we can base this decision on? Is it a bit of an educated guess? Or is it really just a case of doing a well designed experiment to find out?
Just looking at the bnf pages and it seems lower is commonly used.
I wonder what rationale the single doses for these studies were based upon? Common safe daily dosages in use at the time? Were there other reasons?
The mention of CYP3A4 inhibitors is interesting too. Could there be something...
Did I say this would fix everything? I’m desperate and trying to find answers, looking for solutions.
This reply hurts so I’m going to leave the discussion.
Okay. So what’s the route forward?
There’s always risks that something won’t work but I’ve never seen any meaningful change occur unless someone is given or takes responsibility. Then there are motivations to find ways to make it happen.
I think it’s really important that we do something. If...
Yes I understand. I deliberately didn’t make my comment as a reply as it was a chain of thought partly inspired by your post rather than meant as a response to you. I should have made that clearer.
People are complex! The politics of the NHS certainly is. The only route forward I see is making...
I worry when the word complexity is used. It’s like when people refer to our condition as complex in papers. It’s too often used to make things sound more difficult than they are. It’s used to make it sound as if it would be hard to make our lives better. Or at least stop making them worse.
To...
Not sure where this fits best, it’s probably off topic to scientific achievements but interesting to look at in the context of the debate on a pause in development. Something which is increasingly discussed by politicians as well as those in the industry and wider public. So interesting poling...
Good plan. Let me know if there’s anything I can do to help you.
While a select committee may not have teeth, it can bring visibility which brings some public and political attention. Much in the way a public inquiry would be hoped to but without the overheads.
The problem of what will make...
Thanks for your post.
Everyone here has seen me complain and I will continue to about how many doctors have treated me and all of us. There are systemic problems which need fixing. And yes, some personal accountability. Humility and reflection from those who have and continue to fail us would...
A public inquiry sounds like it could give publicity and accountability we want. So I thought I’d try to explain a bit more on why it is not what we need. Hopefully this helps people understand the position, it’s largely based in the weird nuances of process and some political geekery.
In short...
Good clear write up. I’m not a fan of public inquiries, I think there are more effective routes to getting the change we need. But hopefully the rest of the message is heard and gets some much needed attention.
Reminder that you can use things like private browsing to view sites which demand...
Sounds like an interesting and sensible partnership of humans and AI. Humans posing the questions and doing the lab work with a swarm of agents trawling through a huge dataset.
Have there been any long term studies looking at reduction of negative outcomes by model type? Always looking at patient improvement seems such a red herring. We know we don’t have a model to make people better. Until we have a treatment we need a model that helps avoid the really bad things.
Seeing that quote does show how we’re in a position whereby because we are excluded from the healthcare system we don’t have visibility on the balance sheet so the investment in research to improve things for us is harder to make in comparison to other conditions.
That nobody ‘owns’ us within...
Oh for sure. And it’s more easily attacked if you express guilt rather than pride about it and if you’re seen as hypocritical by campaigning against the privilege you have benefited from rather than encouraging it.
Unfortunately not everyone does. The world is unfair. We talk about it and who...
Thanks for that context. It’s useful to see from a different perspective. I was trying to explain a view that is present in the UK to people who may not be familiar with that background, that’s all. It’s useful to hear how the message is seen elsewhere.
Some of those within that group are...
