News from Aotearoa/New Zealand and the Pacific Islands

I heard a bit of this yesterday. I also had 'lots of complex feelings' about it. The women talked about how dismissed they had felt by people in the medical system when advocating for their children with rare disorders. And how they did not want to be the annoying person who persistently...

Persistent SARS-2 infections contribute to long COVID-19, Jacobs, 2021

I'm also not a fan of animal testing, but infecting some ferrets or hamsters and then, sometime later when they aren't shedding virus, checking all the tissues for virus sounds possible. The difficult question of course is whether these other animals develop post-viral fatiguing syndromes...

Leadership through crisis: fighting the fatigue pandemic in healthcare during COVID-19, Whelehan et al, 2021

When I was 10, I had a year off school with something that was diagnosed as ME, and then I recovered. I don't know what caused it, but I wasn't under any sort of stress then. When I was 16, I had glandular fever (presumably EBV) and shingles - at the same time. I had shingles blisters around...

    Gulf War Illness - causes

I can't remember now, but it was while I was on the course of antibiotics. And it took months to not be noticeable.

Leadership through crisis: fighting the fatigue pandemic in healthcare during COVID-19, Whelehan et al, 2021

Fair enough. Good on them for getting some advice, and choosing who they get advice from well. But, if they were writing about an Ebola outbreak, would they talk about managing both the fatigue that the medical staff experienced from working long, emotionally demanding shifts and the...

Leadership through crisis: fighting the fatigue pandemic in healthcare during COVID-19, Whelehan et al, 2021

The abstract suggests the authors fundamentally misunderstand what Long Covid is. It looks as though they don't understand what 'malleable' means either. I hope they meant something more like 'flexible'. It is a very odd choice in that sentence - how could the editors and peer reviewers have...

A clinical primer for the expected and potential post-COVID-19 syndromes, Walitt and Bartrum, 2021

I think the 'psychiatric' in 'persistent mix of somatic and psychiatric symptoms probably refers to things like 'fatigue'. But yes, about the worry about the ME/CFS study, me too. Given that Walitt has been a leader of the NIH ME/CFS study, I hoped this paper would give a hint of pathologies...

A clinical primer for the expected and potential post-COVID-19 syndromes, Walitt and Bartrum, 2021

That's bizarre MSEspe, that Singapore article doesn't mention sore throats at all. The closest it comes is "several studies have affirmed its (i.e. harsh parenting) negative associations with subsequent internalizing and externalizing symptoms among children who experience harsh parenting". It...

    Gulf War Illness - causes

I was given ciprofloxacin for a bladder infection in 2010. I developed an issue with the tendons above my heel - I was hobbling and complaining about it well before I googled for side effects of the drug. The tendon problem did eventually come right. I felt bad on the drug and for some time...

USA: NIH National Institutes of Health news - latest ME/CFS webinar 14 Jan 2025

Walitt has had a key role in recent NIH research into ME/CFS. His published views about fibromyalgia, and the NIH inviting Edward Shorter, an ardent supporter of 'CFS is a psychosomatic illness' to brief them about the illness when a major ME/CFS study was beginning made many of use feel...

What symptoms of ME that you personally experience is (a) not shown on your medical file and/or (b) not in the ME literature.

Good points @Samuel. It is very hard to know what should be attributed to ME, and what might be another illness entirely, and what might just be getting older. It's not helped by the fact that even really small, quite inconsequential things can help with a diagnosis of some conditions - like...

ME/CFS and gulf war illness patients exhibit increased humoral responses to herpesviruses-encoded dUTP, 2017, Halpin, Klimas, Fletcher, Ariza et al

Thanks Michiel. Those four graphs aren't very convincing, are they? There might be statistically significant differences, but there's so much overlap, that it's difficult to believe that levels of dUTPase antibodies are, on their own, the answer to the question of ME/CFS or GWI.

    Updated: What is ME? Video

I've included a link to the video, along with some other resources, in a list for Allied Health Professionals in my region. The video shows what ME/CFS is like very well, and doesn't take long to watch.
