Introducing “Energy Limiting Conditions”: The Emergence and Evolution of a New Impairment Concept, 2025, Hale

I do feel like energy in the purely experiental and “feeling” sense can be a much better way to get the lived experience across than fatigue. But yes just as fatigue is a slippery slope into psychoBS it seems energy is into bioBS. I wish there was a proper way to bring up the experiental...

An expert criticism on post-publication peer review platforms: the case of pubpeer, 2025, Tsatsakis et al

I see the problem with harassment or idk using this for vaccine scepticism or something. But also I think the sciences are way too far on the side of not enough scepticism-epistemic humility. So I think extra could be a good thing.

    News from Germany

And that they’ll use good methodology. IIRC correctly there were quite a few open label trials and overstating of results and dubious mechanisms coming out of the team unfortunately.

Germany's "National Decade Against Post-Infectious Diseases"

Well here’s to hoping they fund some methodologically sound studies and don’t try and reinvent the wheel. Great to have a long term commitment.

Long-term use of melatonin supplements to support sleep may have negative health effects

I’ve been prescribed it long term. (I know the evidence on long term use is mixed). But I think my GP kinda preferred giving me that then hard sleeping pills so they are happy to keep me on. The first time they prescribed they didn’t mention I would need to stop.

Long-term use of melatonin supplements to support sleep may have negative health effects

I wonder why the authors didn’t add the Insomnia + Other Drugs Insomnia-Melatonin + Other Drugs as additional controls, may have told more and made the results look more robust.

Long-term use of melatonin supplements to support sleep may have negative health effects

Yep, that probably creates a bias towards the melatonin group having worse health issues and/or insomnia

Long-term use of melatonin supplements to support sleep may have negative health effects

Well the study is among people with insomnia, not the general population. Perhaps there is still a bias in that people who get prescribed melatonin are less healthy or have worse insomnia etc.

Contested and neglected: Social and medical marginalization in severe Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, 2025, Nezamdoust & Ruel

Was a bit disappointed that they managed to define “CFS” without mentioning PEM. And they seem to focus excessively on “fatigue”. But there’s also a lot of good in here. Appreciate this.

Contested and neglected: Social and medical marginalization in severe Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, 2025, Nezamdoust & Ruel

It feels to me more as if the whole psychosocial stuff is mostly a post-hoc rationalisation for not believing we’re sick. I think the neglect stems further down then the BPS and similar models of the illness.

Daily stress and worry are additional triggers of symptom fluctuations in individuals living with Long COVID... , 2025, O'Connor et al.

Stress is correlated with symptom burden. That sounds wholly unsuprising. I don’t see how they justify assuming causation, stress -> symptom burden, when the opposite seems more likely?

He’s also behind visible and a dodgy study using visible HRV stats with all sorts of methodological problems including an especially bad case of non blinding. (ie. showing the participants their HRV in the morning, telling them they will have a good/bad day based on it, asking them how their day...

There’s a thread for CrunchME. They don’t generally post papers IIRC more just graphs and report on their website.

    News from Germany

Good on the advocates. It probably feels like trying to convince a brick wall to them, but I hope something comes out of their many efforts.
