Michael Sharpe: Mind, Medicine and Morals: A Tale of Two Illnesses (2019) BMJ blog - and published responses

I fell off my bike about 10 years ago. An MRI scan showed that I had a "bone bruise" in my wrist. The doctor told me that "bone bruises" weren't visible until MRIs, so before then I would have been accused of malingering.

Psychosomatic medicine and the psychologising of physical diseases

And seeing as psychomatic illness does not exist, they must be misdiagnosing an awful lot of sufferers of something else to keep their devoted team of 60 busy. Long may I be spared their devotions.

Psychosomatic medicine and the psychologising of physical diseases

To be even fairer, fringe crackpots in Germany should not be underestimated. They are running this place: https://www.klinikum.uni-heidelberg.de/en/kliniken-institute/kliniken/zentrum-fuer-innere-medizin-krehl-klinik/department-of-genereal-internal-medicine-and-psychosomatics/about-us They...

Paul Garner on Long Covid and ME/CFS - BMJ articles and other media.

When I read "embodied memories" it reminded me immediately of the explanation for homeopathy, ie that water retains a memory of whatever has been diluted out of it. Perhaps having the substance in it before it was diluted 30,000 times is an unhappy memory from its childhood which the water has...

Opinion piece: "Am I disabled?" by Joanne Limburg

The last time I went to the UK was via ferry, I was worried about getting out of my car and having to go up all those stairs they have on ferries. Stairs are an absolute bugger and I avoid them whenever possible, and the last thing I wanted was a boatload of people behind me getting more and...

Dr. Kenny DeMeirleir was issued a world patent on a new CFIDS discovery, the increase of asparaginyl beta-hydroxylase (ASPH)

Nope, it's him. He holds lots of patents for various tests and treatments, and is associated with various companies which supply each other and refer patients to each other. Last time I looked into it (quite a while ago) he referred people to R.E.D Laboratories which he or his wife had an...

‘Girl in the Window’ From award-winning author Penny Joelson

This is how the book has been received: School Library Journal said: “A great, fast-paced thriller for younger teens.” Girl in the Window has won the Lambeth Phoenix Book Award 2020 and the NE Book Award 2019! It has also been shortlisted for the Girls Day School Trust Book Award 2020. It...

Lightning Process study in Norway - Given Ethics Approval February 2022

If the effect isn't maintained over time, that will be proof that LP works, but needs to be applied continuously. Need I say more squire? A nod's as good as a wink to a blind horse.

BPS attempts at psychologizing Long Covid

Regarding Morgan, I have just read @dave30th two blogs on the matter, which as ever are excellent. However he is more generous to Morgan than I would be. I agree that everyone can get things wrong. It's how they react next that's important. From Morgan's tweets I've seen so far, there is no...

BPS attempts at psychologizing Long Covid

The Morgan piece is still available online here: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/nov/29/eleanor-morgan-is-still-struggling-with-long-covid-months-after-catching-the-virus It's still listed among Morgan's articles if you search under her name at the Guardian website. As has been noted...

BPS attempts at psychologizing Long Covid

That phrase from Eleanor Morgan has a very familiar ring to it. As for Tomlinson, he seems to have an extremely patronising view of his socially deprived patients. A bit like Wessely's self image - far to good for this but I'm such a nice chap I'm prepared to waste my talents on these poor...

Sick of the Sick Role: Narratives of What “Recovery” Means to People With CFS/ME, 2020, White et al

The first sentence is Peter White's summary of his lifetime's contribution to scientific knowledge. Excuse me for not reading any further. How many decades has he been at it? And still little is known (by him) and it is poorly understood (by him). Perhaps it's time to pass the baton and find...

Blog: Placebos Can Fool Your Mind, but Not Your Body by James Coyne

Do you take the paracetamol with a glass of water? How do you know whether it's the paracetamol or the additional dose of water which does the job? When I get a ME headache I can take ibuprofen, paracetamol, and everything else available over the counter, or even the very strong stuff my wife...
