The authors don't seem to have read this part, as it clearly says that "PEM is more than fatigue following a stressor".
For those who have not been following this topic, the way Elsevier earns money is basically by having researchers do work paid for by taxpayers and doing unpaid peer review, then selling access to the published papers back to researchers.

I was skeptical about this claim and suspected that they had used a flawed definition of PEM. I therefore looked at the methodology. Here is what I found:

It's not representative of the majority of patients. About 25% of patients are severe and bedbound but of those only some are so severely ill that living death becomes an accurate description.
Interesting that people who claim to have suffered damage from the HPV vaccine are apparently labelled as suffering from psychogenic symptoms.
This just fuels distrust towards the medical establishment.
The stigma and disbelief is in part fueled by the all in the mind narrative promoted by Wessely et al. They would disagree they are sending out this message but it's hard to interpret their statement about illness beliefs perpetuating the illness any differently.

Poor Alem. That's horrible. It's upsetting to know that there must be a significant number of patients who are so severely ill they have even difficulties communicating with the world.
