A nanoelectronics-blood-based diagnostic biomarker for ME/CFS (2019) Esfandyarpour, Davis et al

That was a mistake in my part, I was meant to say microfluidic channel. The flow is just during filling... I agree, a clearer diagram of the geometry would be much more helpful. The manuscript I linked however stated: The other manuscript stated: Note the latter (bolded). I wish the width...

A nanoelectronics-blood-based diagnostic biomarker for ME/CFS (2019) Esfandyarpour, Davis et al

Yes, it is a little disappointing that they didn't provide impedance vs frequency curves and the only impedance graph over time they provided were of the purely resistive component (Zre). The magnitude of change was much greater for the resistive component (Zre) than the reactive component...

A nanoelectronics-blood-based diagnostic biomarker for ME/CFS (2019) Esfandyarpour, Davis et al

I don't know what Simon means by "micro chamber", but the schematics show multiple nanoneedle sensor tips perpendicular to the microfludic flow. Like most binding processes, cells forming an interface near the coating on the electrode is a dynamic process and the measured impedance reflects the...

A nanoelectronics-blood-based diagnostic biomarker for ME/CFS (2019) Esfandyarpour, Davis et al

On that topic, I wanted to do a research thesis involving microfluidics, back in 2015/2016 and the overlap between Dr Davis' ME research and microfluidics was intriguing to me, including that paper. I majored in Chemistry, but microfluidics was really the only area I was really interested in...

Can we call ME/CFS a disease?

Most ME/CFS patients have a disease but this is not the same as CFS being a disease...

A nanoelectronics-blood-based diagnostic biomarker for ME/CFS (2019) Esfandyarpour, Davis et al

Is there any evidence for this in human cell culture or PBMCs? The studies showing differences are in animals where there are sex specific differences at the organ level (as a result of different hormone/endocrine signals), but not necessarily the cellular level. It is still disappointing that...

#MEAction: "Unseen: Black people living with ME"

That was around 15-20 years ago, the real issue is no one has bothered to check whether such lack of diagnosis occurs recently. The same goes for many non-western countries (and countries outside the sphere of influence of Japan). I'd like to see high quality epidemiological studies in India and...

Special Report - Online activists are silencing us, scientists say Reuters March 2019

Glaring errors are the norm for mainstream media... It is just that we don't notice most of the time... See:

Acute psychological stress increases serum circulating cell-free mitochondrial DNA, 2019, Picard et al

Indeed. It is inappropriate to derive conclusions from pilot studies like this.

    ME from stress ?

The problem is "stress" is very nonspecific and tells us almost nothing about disease initiation or progression. Similarly, psychological "stress" is neither necessary, nor sufficient to trigger ME or CFS. Hence while "stress" may be a risk factor, it cannot be blamed as a cause.

Epstein-Barr Vaccination could reduce risks of B-cell lymphoma, study suggests

As far as I know, there is no EBV vaccine so this remains hypothetical...

Prediction of long-term outcome after cognitive behavioral therapy for chronic fatigue syndrome, 2019, Knoop et al

It's frustrating that they didn't focus on reporting the absolute activity levels (based on actigraphy) before and after. It would be more interesting to see what variables predict activity at followup, rather than self-report physical functioning or fatigue which is a more indirect measure.

“Understand your illness and your needs”: Assessment-informed patient education for people with multiple functional somatic syndromes, 2019, Pedersen

Perhaps they should do the reverse study - patient informed education for practitioners treating patients with MFSS...

The Guardian's Science Weekly podcast - 2 November 2018 - What role should the public play in science?

I've seen a lot more terrible Daily Mail articles on ME over the last 10 years than I have in the Guardian...

Cognitive factors are associated with disability & pain, but not fatigue among physiotherapy attendees with persistent pain & fatigue, 2019, Antcliff

Cognitions determine questionnaire answering behaviour, so if 'disability' is measured with a questionnaire, it can be the same underlying factor affecting both scores - it is a meaningless association.

Diagnostic sensitivity of 2-day cardiopulmonary exercise testing in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Nelson et al. 2019

Yes and no... If this is going to be used to determine specificity of diagnosis for example (when used in scientific studies investigating the illness), comparisons with other fatiguing neurological conditions for example is necessary, otherwise this may be a non-specific association of...

Characteristics of patients with motor functional neurological disorder in a large UK mental health service (2019) O'Connell, Wessely et al

Exactly. Studies like these cannot generalise anything about the underlying characteristics of patients, rather they reflect the referral and diagnostic biases in practise.

Cochrane ME/CFS GET review temporarily withdrawn

Not necessarily, she has involved in drug trials and systematic reviews for a wide range of conditions. For her reviews of CBT, the studies have been rated as low/very low quality. For "Psychosocial interventions for the prevention of relapse in bipolar disorder", the conclusion was...
