An old paper (2008) on differential gene expression that I came across while looking for something else. Does anyone know if the techniques used and results are still considered robust and if the work was replicated?
There are some commonalities in the genes for which there are gene expression...
Chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) is a multisystem disease, the pathogenesis of which remains undetermined. We set out to determine the precise abnormalities of gene expression in the blood of patients with CFS/ME. We analyzed gene expression in peripheral blood from 25...
Yes, I was thinking that it would be very good to look at the study protocol. If they always planned to analyse the data in this way, then, even though the approach is a bit odd, I'd feel a lot happier that the reported results are solid. It would be great if an author of the paper could...
Yes.
4501 - the prospectively recruited students
238 - the students who got IM during the study period
6 months after infection:
55 - students who met the requirements of at least one ME/CFS diagnostic criteria
>> 20 - students who met the requirements of more than one diagnostic criteria...
I like that the title of this paper includes the word 'Unexplained' - it feels like standing up to the proponents of MUS and saying 'yes, these post-acute infections syndromes are unexplained, and yes, they do represent a significant health care burden. So, how about we start doing some...
Unexplained post-acute infection syndromes, 2021, Iwasaki et al
This paper is useful when explaining why we should not be surprised that Covid-19 can trigger lasting symptoms that look like ME/CFS and like many other post-acute infection syndromes.
Here's the best answer I have found to my question:
Preprint: Chronic COVID-19 Syndrome and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) following the first pandemic wave in Germany.., Kedor et al, 2021
This is a small study and the definition of PEM is not clear, but it found that 41 out of 42...
Yes, I think Angus is wrong in his BPS-like hypothesis. However, he gives the best summary I have found yet of the evidence for much of Long Covid being ME/CFS. That, I think, has been obvious for a good while, but few papers actually come out and say it.
Here's some of the supporting argument:
:) Thanks for those detailed and helpful comments Sarah.
Yes, I've tried to find research specifically about salt in ME/CFS. I don't think there's really much solid evidence for it helping in ME/CFS, although some indication it is useful in POTS. I agree that the benefit of including the...
HW, do you know of any trial evidence supporting the idea that people with ME/CFS are sensitive to medication at higher rates than other people?
I'm not disputing that many people with ME/CFS have found that they are sensitive to medication of course. I myself did not do well on ciprofloxacin...
Re spermine and spermidine:
This study found that the ME/CFS group had lower spermine, but higher spermidine. It's a very interesting finding.
Searching the forum, the only mention of spermine and spermidine is a paper about treatment of Covid-19. The two molecules seem to have a role in...
It's open access if you sign up. I think the settings on my computer prevented me from accessing the study via Voner's link.
Gender skew - not as substantial as is often quoted.
Edit - it isn't clear to me from the paper if the 18 subjects with 'severe ME/CFS' are all of the people who...
No, I haven't. I just picked out a few mostly minor issues, because it was easy to illustrate the problems with them. But I agree with those two big issues you identified - the idea of brain inflammation, specifically in the paraventricular nucleus, and HPA axis dysfunction - as lacking...
It appears that Warren Tate is primarily responsible for this paper, building on the work he did with Angus Mackay. I've no doubt that Warren is a brilliant biochemist and certainly motivated to help people with ME/CFS, but, in my view, this hypothesis paper would have benefited from much more...
Here's another example - this statement is used to support the idea that the gastrointestinal system may be contributing to the neuroinflammation.
The reference given is: Wang J, Song Y, Chen Z, Leng SX. 2018 Connection between systemic inflammation and neuroinflammation underlies...
