Pleconaril and ribavirin in new-onset type 1 diabetes: a phase 2 randomized trial, 2023, Krogvold et al

Abstract Previous studies showed a low-grade enterovirus infection in the pancreatic islets of patients with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes (T1D). In the Diabetes Virus Detection (DiViD) Intervention, a phase 2, placebo-controlled, randomized, parallel group, double-blind trial, 96 children and...

The viral origin of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome Maureen R. Hanson Sections — Can any infection lead to ME/CFS? Why is the enterovirus family the most likely culprit in ME/CFS? What is the relationship between human herpesviruses (HHVs) and ME/CFS? Should the...

Enterovirus D68 in the Anterior Horn Cells of a Child with Acute Flaccid Myelitis

Correspondance from an autopsy case, so early finding. https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc2118155?query=TOC Autopsy material from a child who died from an acute flaccid myelitis–like illness showed EV-D68 RNA and protein in anterior horn cells and their axons, strongly implicating the...

John Chia Interview by Amy Proal and Enteroviruses in ME (Blogpost)

Hello Guys, I wrote a blogpost on enteroviruses in myalgic encephalomyelitis focusing on John Chia's research and with a section on historical research (which was mostly conducted in the UK in the 80s and 90s). In the post I tried to provide a substantial look at this topic since it is, in...

Interferon-Lambda: A Potent Regulator of Intestinal Viral Infections, 2017, Lee and Baldridge

Abstract Interferon-lambda (IFN-λ) is a recently described cytokine found to be of critical importance in innate immune regulation of intestinal viruses. Endogenous IFN-λ has potent antiviral effects and has been shown to control multiple intestinal viruses and may represent a factor that...

Hypothesis The Enterovirus Theory of Disease Etiology in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: A Critical Review, Hanson et al (2021)

Abstract Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a complex, multi-system disease whose etiological basis has not been established. Enteroviruses (EVs) as a cause of ME/CFS have sometimes been proposed, as they are known agents of acute respiratory and gastrointestinal...

Is there good evidence that ME/whatever after an enteroviral infection is very different to states after other infections?

Some people insist ME can only follow from an enterovirus; there are other post viral/infectious sequelae but they are distinctly different and not ME. I don’t recall reading about any studies that showed this but I don’t know or recall every bit of evidence of course.

Everything you always wanted to know about non-cytolytic enterovirus but were too afraid to ask

I thought I'd be the first to take advantage of this new MEpedia sub-fourm, by posting a link to a new MEpedia article I just completed today, which is found here: Non-cytolytic enterovirus — MEpedia article This MEpedia article is a (hopefully) accessible introduction to non-cytolytic...
