Seeking adults with and without fatigue symptoms
USC's Thompson Institute is seeking volunteer research participants who will help us understand the underlying illness process of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). Participants will also help us develop imaging criteria that will aid the diagnosis of ME/CFS.

The study is the first to investigate brain function in ME/CFS in terms of energy supplies and chemical messengers. It is also the first significantly sized study to attempt to develop a diagnostic tool by combined advanced MRI and machine learning.

Eligibility
The study might be a good fit for you if you are:

aged 25-65 years old, and a healthy adult with a sedentary lifestyle (doing strenuous physical exercise – such as tennis or gym workouts – for less than 30 minutes per week)

or

aged 25-65 years old, and have:

an unexplained fatigue condition, or

ME/CFS, or

Fibromyalgia.

About this Opportunity

We are seeking to appoint a talented researcher in Translational Neuroimaging to join the myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) neuroimaging research program. This position is supported by a recently awarded NHMRC Ideas Grant. The ME/CFS neuroimaging research program combine advanced multimodal neuroimaging techniques with machine learning to understand neurological disease process and to develop a Neuromarker for objective diagnosis of ME/CFS. The SCMNTI integrates research, teaching, and clinic service as a unified model. The 2018 ARC Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) outcomes rated Neuroscience at USC as 5 (well above world standard), which was primarily attributed to the SCMNTI.

Seeking healthy adults with a sedentary lifestyle for world-first study

USC's Thompson Institute seeks healthy adults (25-65yrs) who spend a lot of time being sedentary (eg sitting at a desk) to take part in research into chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), a poorly understood and debilitating illness.

We invite staff, students, and the community to volunteer to participate in the study’s control group, which is vital in enabling us to see how people with ME/CFS differ from the rest of the population.

The USC study is the first study to investigate brain function in ME/CFS in terms of energy supply and chemical messengers. It is also the first significantly sized study to attempt to develop a diagnostic tool by combining brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and machine learning.

This is important for people suffering from ME/CFS because there is no known underlying disease process and no biological basis for diagnosis. Typically, diagnoses are lengthy and treatments inadequate.

Participation includes questionnaires, health checks such as blood pressure, wearing an activity monitor and chest strap, and MRI scanning. The MRI is a non-invasive and safe imaging technique with no ionizing radiation.

You will be offered a copy of your brain image for your own purpose/interest after the MRI.

Adult participants with ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, or fatigue conditions are also sought for the study.
