Job description
This is an opportunity to join a multidisciplinary Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital Charity-funded study that aims to investigate the efficacy of a psychophysiological intervention, called Balance-ACT, for long COVID, in the context of a randomised controlled trial.
The therapist with an interest in research will carry out the Balance-ACT treatments with participants with long COVID. They will receive bespoke training to ensure they are competent to deliver the intervention and will receive regular supervision.
The successful candidate will join a team of clinicians and scientists working across the spectrum of physical and mental health under the supervision of Professors Trudie Chalder and Nick Hart; and Dr Caroline Jolley. The work will be conducted in the Department of Psychological Medicine with strong links to the Centre for Human and Applied Physiological Sciences laboratories in the King’s College Hospital Department of Respiratory Medicine; and Respiratory Medicine at St Thomas’.

This is an opportunity to take part in a multidisciplinary study funded by Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital Charity, which aims to investigate the effectiveness of a psychophysiological intervention called Balance-ACT in Long-COVID as part of a randomized controlled trial.
The scientifically interested therapist will carry out the Balance ACT treatments on participants with Long-COVID. They receive tailored training to ensure they are competent to deliver the intervention and receive regular supervision.
The successful candidate will join a team of clinicians and scientists working across the spectrum of physical and mental health under the supervision of Professors Trudie Chalder and Nick Hart. and Dr. Caroline Jolley. The work is carried out in the Department of Psychological Medicine with close links to the laboratories of the Center for Human and Applied Physiological Sciences in the Department of Respiratory Medicine at King’s College Hospital; and respiratory medicine in St. Thomas.
The incumbent will work closely with clinical colleagues in the community and King’s Health Partners’ hospital-based long-term COVID services.
This position can be offered on a part-time or full-time basis. This is a fixed-term contract for 12 months.
Key Responsibilities
- Providing specialized psychological assessment and treatment to adults with Long-COVID using the manual treatment called Balance-ACT as part of the study
- Formulation of psychological treatment plans specific to each client based on an analysis of complex factors contributing to the presentation and selective reliance on appropriate conceptual and theoretical models described in the Balance-ACT Manual
- Delivery of Balance-ACT either in person, by telephone or as a team
- To assess and monitor risks and create appropriate risk management plans.
- Communicate highly complex and sensitive information skillfully, tactfully and sensitively with clients, carers and colleagues; Consideration of sensory and cultural communication barriers.
- Adhere to the highest standards of clinical record keeping and report writing in accordance with professional and trust guidelines, including electronic data entry and recording (including patient journey and CCS).
- Regular clinical and professional supervision by a more experienced clinician
- Contribution to teaching and training
- Managing the agreed workload under the supervision of a more experienced therapist
