Background: Mental symptoms such as fatigue, concentration difficulties, and sleep disorders are frequently reported in both Post-COVID Syndrome (PCS) and Post-COVID-19 Vaccination Syndrome (PCVS). Although symptom profiles may overlap, comparative epidemiological data from the general population are limited.

Methods: We conducted a representative online survey of 4,632 adults in Germany and investigated mental symptoms associated with PCS and PCVS, including fatigue, cognitive problems, sleep disturbances, impaired performance and depressed mood. Socio-demographic factors, vaccination status, vaccine type and number of vaccinations were analysed.

Results: The prevalence of self-reported mental symptoms of PCS was 12.1% among respondents, with women and younger individuals more commonly affected. The prevalence of self-reported PCVS was 12.6% among vaccinated individuals, with no significant gender differences, but fewer cognitive symptoms in older adults. Respondents with only one vaccination reported the highest rate of PCVS symptoms (20.8%), which decreased to 8.9% for those with four or more vaccinations. Differences between vaccine types were small overall, but non-mRNA vaccines were associated with a slightly higher rate of sleep and concentration problems.

Conclusion: Mental symptoms are relatively common after both SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination and show overlap, especially fatigue. These findings highlight how difficult it is to distinguish PCS from PCVS and emphasize the need to consider alternative explanations, such as undiagnosed depressive disorders, in clinical assessments.

Sure, depression is absolutely the most likely explanation for the symptoms. /s
Yeah, the following article about this study gets spammed on several trash news sites in germany like https://smartup-news.de/gesundheit/verkannt-als-long-covid-echte-depression-bleibt-oft-unentdeckt/

A representative study involving over 4,600 adults in Germany investigated this question. According to the findings, around twelve percent of respondents reported mental health issues both after a COVID-19 infection and after vaccination. The German Depression Foundation (Stiftung Deutsche Depressionshilfe) warns: Many symptoms overlap with those of depression – and are therefore often misclassified.

“This poses the risk that physicians and psychologists may misattribute the symptoms of an independent depressive disorder as PCS or PCVS, leading to valuable time being lost before appropriate depression treatment begins,” explains Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hegerl, Chairman of the Foundation.

Defining depression as the presence of symptoms regardless of plausible alternative explanations is just lunacy.

Even the DSM5 states that symptoms that can clearly be attributed to another medical condition shouldn’t be included for MDD.

And the risk of false positives is probably far higher for depression and anxiety than for PCC.

I'm sorry but it's completely useless to study this stuff. The vague generic definition of what mental health or symptoms even means makes this all a clusterfuck of confusion.

A dehydrated person would check all those boxes. The whole of mental health care is a giant mess and the profession is too cowardly to look inward at the disasters they keep causing with their ineptitude.
