“What’s Up, Doc?” Nancy Klimas on Viruses, ME/CFS’s Greatest Need, and Her ME/CFS Clinical Trial—Cort Johnson

https://www.healthrising.org/blog/2025/01/10/klimas-ebv-clinical-trials-chronic-fatigue-syndrome/

Lot of stuff in here—most of it not my cup of tea. NK has been talking about this drug trial for ME/CFS for many years now and we never see progress.

“So, what makes Dr. Klimas excited is the renewed focus on viruses and the immune system as treatment targets. She hopes to create a “Center of Excellence for Viral Reactivation and Human Disease” that can research viral reactivation and treat it…”

At the very end of the article there is a plug for some mind/body course—strange.

Bumping this thread so people see this. Strange stuff, probably something like Lightning Process.

“Institute of Neuro-Immune Medicine Embraces Mind/Body Approach
Lastly, Dr. Klimas didn’t mention it, but an email today indicated that the Institute for Neuro-Immune Medicine is branching out and has teamed up with Conquer CFS to provide people with ME/CFS two months of free access to the Conquer CFS Emergency Reset course created by Max Kennedy – a former person with ME/CFS – in conjunction with Dr. Jenny Jin, an CFS/Fibromyalgia and Pain Management Expert.

More and more ME/CFS experts are including mind/body/neuroplasticity practices in their treatment protocols. To get 2 months of free access:”

Which is a dark pattern, when the URL is claiming to be —

I presume Cort has simply copy/pasted from the email, however, as reported, I would say this reflects poorly on NK.

When challenged in the article's comments, Cort has responded with —

Let’s not confuse ME/CFS with a neurodegenerative disease that is actively destroying neurons.

There’s little evidence thus far that the brain or nerves in ME/CFS have been physically damaged, Instead – at least for right now – ME/CFS and fibromyalgia appear to be more “signaling” or brain connectivity diseases where the pathways between the different parts of the brain are “off”.

The pathways that are off are those that cause pain, fatigue, brain fog and affect autonomic nervous system functioning.

Comparing ME/CFS to diseases which cause overt brain damage such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis doesn’t really work.

I assume Nancy is doing this because she’s found that it’s helpful for some people. Otherwise why would she do it?

He may well be right and abnormal (intercellular/intracellular) signalling may be the problem underlying ME/CFS. But that is a very long way from neural pathway signalling being the problem, and even further from dysfunctional neural pathways that can be magically corrected with neuroplasticity/reset bullshit.

That conquercfs website is weird. Clicking the about link talks about two completely different people who are apparently dedicated to —

Our mission is to empower professionals and new entrepreneurs

Our school is committed to creating and continuously improving effective learning methods to diverse communities on online educational needs. We are dedicated in promoting online knowledge and awareness of the demands of the ever changing internet technological trends for professional competency.

Given the testimonials are all from "Grace Walsh" I presume he's still got the default template page up. Maybe his subconscious mind was 100% in charge that day, as opposed to his usual 90%.

Don't loose the opportunity to become happier, more effient and more effective in your daily professional life

Wow that conquercfs thing is expensive. The standard course is £1,750 and the ultimate course is £1,999. (I think you can also pay a couple hundred a month instead. Edit: and there is a cheaper "emergency reset" course for £39/month.) The ultimate course includes three one-on-one calls with the founder, Max Kennedy, who is a "fully qualified health and wellness coach".

Barely any details on the website of what you're paying for. Maybe buried in the blogs section or his Youtube channel. (Edit: I missed some details on the home page, copied a few posts down.)

Giving me scammy vibes. Like the CFS Recovery channel, whose founder's "big goal" within 6 months is making at least $60,000 per month (which is $720,000 per year) or he'll be "extremely upset":

I think these guys have found an effective method to prey on desperate people.

Very confused about why Nancy Klimas's organization would endorse this.

Really disappointing when researchers start promoting this type of course by yet another patient who has" fully recovered from CFS" and has now transformed themselves into a "Wellness" Coach and backed up by a rehabilitation specialist doctor - the "expert". ( We have a researcher here in NZ start recommending such courses)

He offers one to one coaching and although not qualified (says he is not a doctor or therapist - is helping someone's "childhood and trauma related issues" (as per the client testimonial). I would rather use the money he is charging and go see a professionally trained therapist if I had childhood trauma. It makes you wonder what his diagnosis was as his course is not going to treat ME.

On this page he outlines his "Emergency Reset course"
home

"Simply, your Nervous system is not functioning properly and is under constant stress which leads to many symptoms that you may be experiencing. The guide helps you fully understand what is happening with your body and mind, addresses these issues and helps you reset your Nervous system to a more balance state, includes :
1) Explanation of the Fight, Flight, Freeze response (FFF) and how this relates to your situation
2) Tailored yoga video sessions to support recovery
3) Ambient 'sound healing' download sessions (calms the Central Nervous System), Guided Hypnotherapy Recordings.
4) Key diet framework principles, explaining the gut/brain connection and how this affects you and your recovery.
5) Expert instructional videos, including information about trigger points, why negative symptoms occur and many more."

Why do so many of these fully recovered people become “wellness coaches”?

There are so many careers to choose from….
God complex.

You’re told it’s your responsibility to recover,
confuse correlation and causation, and all of the sudden you feel like a shaman who has to use your all powerful knowledge to “help” those who “haven’t figured out” recovery.

It’s really disappointing that people with actual MDs buy into and perpetuate this.

Not just the money, though that is a big one.

Being one who 'recovered' can bring a kind of calling, of being special, a leader chosen to help the lesser mortals. Only a short step from there to the unshakeable certainty of fanaticism.

What is going on at that institute?

"Holistic Wellness"?!

"Detoxification"?!

"Functional medicine"?!

"Homeopathy"?!

This seems like pure alternative medicine quackery. I though this organization was at least half serious. Nancy Klimas seems okay. How can she work in a place like that? Is this a recent development?
