Frankly says everything about why psychiatry delivers so little if Sharpe and Wessely are the "best" among them. What a sad state of affairs, elevating con men like those two.

Haven't even solved a single one of the diseases in their own field and trying to expand into not solving many more outside of it. What could possibly go wrong?
 
"Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry" used to be called "Psychosomatic Medicine" which was defined as "the psychiatry of the medically ill." In effect, these were psychiatrists who were brought in to consult on psychiatric problems brought on by physical illness. This could include evaluating psychiatric problems like depression arising in cancer patients, psychiatric manifestations of late stage AIDS, post-partum depression/psychosis, stroke and psychiatric issues related to organ transplantation. I don't think it applies to "hysteria," i.e. the conversion of psychological stress into physical symptoms.


The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) no longer offers board certification in "Psychosomatic Medicine." The name of the certification was changed on 1/1/18 to "Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry."

I'd imagine that the usage is the same in UK.

Their journal is titled Psychosomatics so it appears they only changed the name of the discipline and nothing else. The ideas are exactly the same as a century ago, only their presentation has changed.

Rebranding a failed idea works for food, as long as you change the recipe anyway. It's pretty amazing how they seem to think that the only problem with their ideas is how they are perceived. Really a marvel how so many smart people can think so stupidly. Almost a kind of mass hysteria in itself.

There is exactly zero need or demand for that. It is a completely made-up problem. Sick people need tangible support, the everyday kind of stuff, and bits of psychological support. Psychiatry is concerned with excessively abnormal psychology. This is not its remit. It serves no purpose whatsoever that are not served by merely making certain access to psychiatric care is universally accessible, to sick and otherwise healthy people alike.

It is a false solution that has failed to find a problem and so chose to invent it by distilling giant egos, rejecting reality and substituting their own. It wastes resources, impairs progress and causes harm.

In trying to elevate psychiatry, these fools are in the process of making it so unreliable and suspicious that they will discredit the entire field.

Sadly, this reveals a lot about the field than it does about Sharpe.

A whole field of science that elevates charlatans as paragons of excellence is fitting when you consider the non-accomplishments and general mediocrity of this field.

Those two things are very much connected.
