Science based Medicine: Placebo Myths Debunked

done. see https://www.s4me.info/index.php?threads/reasons-to-be-sceptical-of-that-shiny-new-study-a-bibliography.212/ I've included the following summary: Yay, first time we've cross-referenced an article in the library with its corresponding S4ME discussion! Note in that section of the...

ScienMag: Usual antidepressants may not work in patients with chronic illness

Yea. Before we talk about how to treat it, let's talk about what we mean by it and how we decide if someone's got it (spoiler: all that is a super big mess). Yes, genuine depression is real - and awful - but the diagnostic category has become way too broad. Honestly, its hard not to be...

What is the course of your ME/CFS?

I think a better fit for my pattern is a hyperactive immune system account. On encountering an infection, my immune reaction goes through the roof right from day 1 (I recently had it measured: after a vaccination challenge, I'm off the charts inflammation-wise within the first 48 hours). I do...

    Microbiome testing reports discussion

That's a fair point, but then the whole thing becomes sort of unfalisifiable. Not to mention unmodifiable. I'm just wary of hopping on the microbiome bandwagon here. Think it might be relevant to those who have dietary sensitivities, but maybe not for the rest of us.

A RCT of the Tumor Necrosis Factor Antagonist Infliximab for Treatment-Resistant Depression

PS Its kind of a big deal, because this study has created a whole industry of researchers claiming that when people feel sad, bad or stressed about the world they produce inflammation. You end up with really highly cited studies like this one: full article here Now here's the problem for us...

A RCT of the Tumor Necrosis Factor Antagonist Infliximab for Treatment-Resistant Depression

Full title: A Randomized Controlled Trial of the Tumor Necrosis Factor Antagonist Infliximab for Treatment-Resistant Depression Authors: Raison et al Date: 2012 link to article Five minute video explanation for dummies Not brand new research or anything, but kind of interesting - and relevant...

    Microbiome testing reports discussion

I'm amazed at how little changes in my diet affect my illness. I have made major modifications of late, cut out all flour and sugar products. Effect on my symptoms: zero. I suspect if my microbiome had anything to do with my illness, then it should be possible to influence my symptoms at least...

Poll: When during the day do you have the most energy? That is when you are not in relapse, and not sick with the flu

I chose "other" because my illness never feels like a lack of energy. It feels like a lot of nasty sick symptoms. If there's a time of day when the symptoms seem to lift a bit, then its late evening, after 9pm.

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) two-year observation study: 36.5% suffered from chronic fatigue syndrome

Yes, it is rather confused. I was especially curious about this: I just can't believe the incidence of genuine PTSD could be all that high. Being severely ill - possibly at risk of death - is undoubtedly traumatic. But I think it would only rarely lead to the type of distressing...

What is the course of your ME/CFS?

@chrisb, I thought the term came from MS, where the person is asymptomatic during the remission periods? However you define it, relapsing-remitting does imply more than "some days are better than others". It has to mean a really dramatic reduction in symtomatology, a return to near-normal...

What is the course of your ME/CFS?

Yea, infections, infections, infections. Sometimes the whole family would catch some stomach bug, and I'd initially have the same symptoms, but then they would recover and my symptoms would just get increasingly severe.... and then the full CFS symptoms would kick in (raging headache, burning...

What is the course of your ME/CFS?

There seems to me a difference between a variable, fluctuating pattern and what's usually meant by relapsing-remitting, which is true remissions (illness gone) in the remission phases. I think I'm unusual in that for the first 23 years, I had a true relapsing-remitting patterns. Relapse: in...

Dare to hope... what amazingly great thing might happen in S4ME's first year?

I think that's great! Also, others can pitch in. I would be happy to hack away at people's posts in the languages I claim to be able to speak. Its so much easier to translate into your own L1 than it is to do it in the other direction (L1= first language!)

Dare to hope... what amazingly great thing might happen in S4ME's first year?

I wish we could somehow make this forum more accessible to people who don't feel confident writing in English. Like allowing people to post in their own language and to call for a translator from amongst the membership? (short messages, obviously).
