IiME letter to Mark Baker (NICE) re: CBT & GET as recommended treatments

I assume you could have "coping" CBT which tried to challenge depressive thoughts that were associated with being ill or other thoughts associate with not coping with being ill. But I suspect more general counseling or in some cases help with practical problem solving (e.g. how to get meals...

Feedback from Stakeholder Engagement Workshop for the NICE guidelines on ME, Jan 2018

Do people have to physically attend committee meetings or is it done in virtual meetings (or options to join by phone) using a phone/skype.

IiME letter to Mark Baker (NICE) re: CBT & GET as recommended treatments

We should also remember that FINE had a null result and was done after the NICE guidelines.

IiME letter to Mark Baker (NICE) re: CBT & GET as recommended treatments

I don't think that is the issue. PACE and the other preceding trials used subjective outcomes when the trials were open label and the chosen interventions aimed at changing how patients thought about symptoms. Thus the results they are relying on for NICE are unreliable. This is demonstrated by...

Dr Myhill’s complaint to GMC about PACE authors.

I suspect they will want to cover their backs but would prefer not to have to deal with it.

Blog: Gelman, "The puzzle: Why do scientists typically respond to legitimate scientific criticism in an angry, defensive, closed, non-scientific way?"

I'm not surprised when scientists react badly to criticism. Sometimes you have to be quite single minded to push ideas through and in doing so ignore criticism. However, its good to listen and understand the criticisms as it can lead to strengthening the approach or the supportive arguments.

Open letter to TEDxBristol regarding Esther Crawley's presentation on 2 November 2017

Yes it was big news. I was really commenting on the SMC using him to comment and giving the background for those who didn't see. I assume the SMC were struggling to get people to back the LP.

Open letter to TEDxBristol regarding Esther Crawley's presentation on 2 November 2017

It sounds like a eugenics conference with bad science and white supremacist speakers that UCL was unaware of. What I thought was interesting was it was organised by a honorary psychology professor James Thompson...

    Format of NICE stakeholder meeting?

The problem with considering HR monitoring is if there is no supporting evidence in terms of research then it should not be in the NICE guidelines. If patients push certain things without evidence other stakeholders will push for their favoured (exercise or CBT) things equally without evidence.

United Kingdom: Sussex & Kent ME/CFS Society News

I suspect if there is a change in the perceived number of patients who are severe then its due to patients giving up on doctors. But I've not seen any research showing any evaluation of the effect of the NICE guidelines.

(Not a recommendation) Alastair Miller: The prognosis of CFS/ME

I think this says more about Alistair Miller's understanding of good methodology than anything else. Its no wonder AfME were so bad when their former scientific adviser exhibits this standard of analysis.

How do we partner with Pharma?

In the IT industry startups provide a different avenue to R&D than the traditional internal investment model. Large companies are expected by the markets to generate profits and hence it is hard to absorb risk of large scale spending on research - it just looks bad when markets have a short term...

    Format of NICE stakeholder meeting?

I think tea and sympathy may be far better. CBT is about getting people to change thoughts and behaviours in a fairly mechanistic way.

    Format of NICE stakeholder meeting?

I would prefer a genuine 'don't know' category as it reflects the lack of understanding and perhaps could be used to push for more research. But the concern with a 'don't know' category is that psychiatry has tried to grab and control this through MUS; an area that just seems to be based on a...

    Format of NICE stakeholder meeting?

Yes I agree we need to keep the message very simple so that it cannot be misunderstood. The guidelines should include reference to treating symptoms using standard methods so for example if someone is also suffering from depression due to being ill and CBT could help with this (I've no idea if...

Gaming addiction classified as disorder by WHO

In the mid 2000 there was a report in the US on cyber bullying and one of the issues they raised was that for kids most of the cyber bullying came from people they knew in schools. But unlike more traditional bullying it didn't just happen when someone was at school but being online allowed the...

Action for ME terminates, by mutual agreement with the University of Bristol, contract to fund Crawley study

It sounds like AfME may be changing their story on what the funding was given for. At one point they seemed to be suggesting it was given for Crawley's specific project rather than for "the alleviation of childhood suffering"

    Format of NICE stakeholder meeting?

In terms of severe patients I think it is worth ensuring the guidelines list symptoms that people do see as part of ME sometimes doctors seem surprised at the range of symptoms people suffer from. The other thing is access to medical care for the house bound. I think the current guidelines do...

Let's talk wheelchairs and mobility scooters

I have wondered in the past if there was room for a lot of innovation around wheelchairs. Both in terms of the physical construction to help get over different surfaces etc as well with electric wheelchairs I wondered if they are utilizing battery improvements developed for electric cars and...
