    Biology for dummies

Can someone please explain this to me in simple terms (I'm in crash, poor cognition): Are all nutrients absorbed in the small intestine or does the stomach absorb some too? It seems that at least some medications are absorbed in the stomach? Considering how quickly they can act. Can I access a...

Weird NHS ME clinic referral form

Found it. It's loooong. A load of questions about symptoms, which I think is mostly based on Fukuda criteria. "Describe what happens if you push yourself too hard" "Are there any other symptoms which worry you?" Questions about mental health history - have you ever experienced depression? If...

Protocol Faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in Norwegian outpatients with mild to severe ME/CFS: protocol (...), 2024, Skjevling et al. Comeback Study

This just shows how ridiculous the BPS approach is. A trial of CBT for MS resulted in fatigued MS patients REPORTING less fatigue than healthy controls. Honestly :banghead::banghead:

Weird NHS ME clinic referral form

I actually think I do have it somewhere! Will look later. I'm so glad I never got to the point of sending it in - I definitely wrote things on there, out of naivety, that would not have served me well to say at a BPS clinic.

Probiotics for ME/CFS and IBS, Julin et al, Stora Sköndal (Sweden)

Surely they should check beforehand what the people's levels of intestinal bacteria are like at the start. Otherwise the research is kind of meaningless. Some people with ME have SIBO and will be made worse with probiotics.

Weird NHS ME clinic referral form

I just remembered this... Last year, I was given a referral to the local NHS CFS/ME clinic. They sent me a massive questionnaire to fill out. I never had an appointment with them in the end, because I left the area to move in with my parents. (I'm glad now I never saw them because I'm sure it...

Do the green ones cause any pressure on the jaw? I have this problem with my current ear defenders.

Genome-wide association study identifies eight risk loci and implicates metabo-psychiatric origins for anorexia nervosa

I know people who have or have had anorexia who would absolutely say that their thoughts and beliefs are highly involved in anorexia. - one who doesn't eat because she believes that she doesn't deserve to eat - two who became anorexic due to seeking something to control during a time of turmoil...

    Cortisol & eating

Just a biology question. I think I remember reading somewhere on the internet (though it is possible that I misunderstood what I read) - and I've been searching and can't find it again - that eating food causes cortisol secretion. I think this was in the context of the circadian rhythm and...

Suggest a name for Chris Ponting's ME GWAS project!

Study of Heritable Illness Traits (SHIT) Genome Report On Associations Newly found (GROAN) Heritable pathoLogy Project (HeLP) Disclaimer: these suggestions are meant as a joke. Since the BPS researchers seem to be fond of acronyms like PACE, SMILE etc.... I wanted to see if I could have some...

    Weighted blankets

Thanks. How heavy is the Jacquard? And how heavy is the John Lewis silk one? And how warm is the John Lewis silk one? For reference, my preferred weight is that of a 9 tog duvet.

    Weighted blankets

Two threads on this topic have been merged. The thread title has been changed to cover both threads. Sigh. I rely quite a lot on the weight of my duvet to make me sleepy, so when it's too hot for my usual duvet, I'm rather at a loss for getting to sleep. Last summer, I was able to sleep...

    Hydroxyproline elevated in ME/CFS

Reading Jen Brea's latest post on Medium, I came across some interesting information. I have created this thread to discuss these findings about hydroxyproline and collagen. It so happens that I heard about this through a post written by Jen Brea. However, please keep this thread to discussing...

    Autism and ME/CFS

Interesting, but clearly the two conditions can be distinguished by the fact that ME involves physical fatigue, PEM etc, and often a plethora of other symptoms, and ADHD doesn't. Also I highly doubt that the cognitive symptoms of pediatric ME are indistinguishable from ADHD in severe (or even...

    Autism and ME/CFS

Isn't Dr Wakefield the guy who said that the MMR vaccine causes autism? That's now been throughly debunked? Many autistic people will find this notion highly offensive. ME is very clearly an illness. Autism on the other hand, few autistics would call it an illness, many see it as...
