Tesco has taken steps to help shoppers with hidden disabilities by launching the sunflower lanyard scheme in stores across the UK.

The supermarket joins the Valuable 500; a global movement that is aiming to get 500 corporations worldwide to table disability on the agenda and take action to be more inclusive.

According to Valuable 500, over 1.3 billion people across the world live with some form of disability, while only four per cent of businesses are focused on making offerings inclusive of disablilty.

The sunflower lanyards is one of several measures being introduced to promote disability inclusion for customers and colleagues in 2020.

Hidden disabilities refers to those that aren't immediately obvious but which still have a major impact on people's lives and include: sight/hearing problems, epilepsy, autism, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, cystic fibrosis and mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, attention deficit disorder, learning disabilities and agoraphobia.

The lanyards are a discreet signal to staff that the wearer has a hidden disability and could could require additional assistance while shopping.
