Opera Mariposa – Towards Tomorrow
Benefit Show

"Soprano and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis sufferer Jacqueline Ko presents Toward Tomorrow, a benefit show for the ME/FM Society of BC. This June, an award-winning soprano will sing to support chronic neuro-immune disease awareness. On Saturday, June 16th, Vancouver singer and producer Jacqueline Ko will present the gala benefit concert Toward Tomorrow at Marpole United Church. The show will raise awareness and funds for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) – sometimes referred to as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome – and Fibromyalgia (FM), with proceeds supporting the ME/FM Society of BC.

Ko has suffered from ME since age six, so the cause is close to her heart. “ME can change your life forever – it definitely did for me,” Ko says. She wants to raise awareness for the disease, which affects around 15-30 million worldwide and 1.6% of people in Canada. “I’ve read studies that compare ME’s impact to multiple sclerosis, late-stage cancer or congestive heart failure. Yet there’s barely any research funding, most medical schools don’t even teach this disease, and they say as many as 9 out of 10 people aren’t even diagnosed. I was lucky in that respect – but even with a diagnosis, we don’t fully understand the cause or have a cure.”"

"I wrote Toward Tomorrow to bring attention to this crisis"
This month Vancouver's Opera Mariposa, a company "run by young artists, for young artists", presents Toward Tomorrow, a something-for-everyone event with a great cause.

Opera Mariposa co-founder Jacqueline Ko wrote Toward Tomorrow as a way to raise awareness for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (often referred to as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), a disease from which she has suffered since the age of six.

"ME can change your life forever - it definitely did for me," says Ko. "I've read studies that compare ME's impact to multiple sclerosis, late-stage cancer or congestive heart failure. Yet there's barely any research funding, most medical schools don't even teach this disease, and they say as many as 9 out of 10 people aren't even diagnosed. I was lucky in that respect - but even with a diagnosis, we don't fully understand the cause or have a cure"

The Impossible Dream

Opera singer and neuroimmune disease sufferer
Jacqueline Ko fights for disability visibility with
The Impossible Dream, a benefit show for the ME/FM Society of BC

Saturday, May 18th

This May, an award-winning Vancouver singer will raise her voice for chronic neuroimmune diseases. On Saturday, May 18th, soprano Jacqueline Ko will present The Impossible Dream: A Triumphant New Benefit and Awareness Show at St. Helen’s Anglican Church. Proceeds will support the ME|FM Society of BC, and the event celebrates the May 12th International Awareness Day for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) – sometimes controversially referred to as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome – and Fibromyalgia (FM).

[I like that they refer to ME and then say - 'sometimes referred to as CFS'...... it's usually the other way around]

Another stat re the numbers effected in Canada; from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (a branch of Health Canada) that cites a 2017 Statistics Canada survey noting 560,000 have the disease: " a staggering 37% increase over results gathered three years earlier."

Opera Mariposa's 2020 Benefit + Awareness Online Campaign
Our congratulations to Opera Mariposa on launching their first-ever online Benefit+Awareness Campaign to honour May Awareness Month for chronic neuroimmune diseases!

Mariposa's 2020 live May Benefit + Awareness performance, This is ME, was cancelled due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Undeterred, Stephanie and Jacqueline Ko have found a way to continue their annual fundraising for ME charities by taking it online.

Mariposa's Artistic Director and ME advocate, Jacqueline Ko, produced her first Benefit + Awareness Show for ME at age seventeen. So far, these events have raised over $80,000 for charity.

We are so grateful to Jacqueline, Stephanie and Mariposa for their work in raising awareness of ME, fibromyalgia and dis/ability, and for generously supporting our Society since 2017. Their support has been essential to the growth of our Society and the work we are doing in education, awareness raising, patient support, advocacy and research.

Want a chance to win a singing telegram by a talented Opera Mariposa artist? a Pandemic Preparedness Care Package? Opera Diva Crystal Jewellery? or one of many other exciting prizes in Opera Mariposa's Online Benefit + Awareness event?

Disability-Led Opera Company Raises Their Voice For At-Risk Chronic Illness Community During COVID-19
Canada's only disability-led, disability-run opera company is raising their voice in a new way for an at-risk community. Throughout the month of May, Vancouver's Opera Mariposa is running their first-ever online Benefit + Awareness campaign, a charity fundraiser in support of the ME|FM Society of BC. The digital event honours the International Awareness Month for chronic neuroimmune diseases, specifically ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis) and FM (fibromyalgia). In the midst of a pandemic, it also advocates for a community that is uniquely at risk.

Opera Mariposa has held a Benefit + Awareness Show for ME & FM every year since the company's inception, and was working on their eighth annual charity concert when COVID-19 halted the show. "One day, we were in the middle of planning rehearsals," says Mariposa general manager Stephanie Ko, who has suffered from ME since age eight. "Then COVID-19 happened, and it rapidly became clear there was no way for us to responsibly proceed with the production."

In such challenging times, though, the Mariposa team wanted to support the chronically ill community more than ever. "People with ME and FM are incredibly vulnerable right now," says Ko. "Statistics Canada shows that these patients already have the highest poverty levels and greatest unmet healthcare needs of any patient group in Canada. What's worse, is illnesses like ME are known to have a post-viral onset. There have been documented cases triggered by other coronaviruses, and based on previous studies, some researchers are warning that up to 10% of recovering COVID-19 patients could go on to develop ME."
