Long COVID symptom trajectories according to post-COVID-19 vaccination status: a prospective longitudinal study

Abstract
Long COVID remains a substantial public health challenge, and the relationship between post-COVID-19 vaccination and symptom persistence remains uncertain. This prospective longitudinal study evaluated long COVID symptom trajectories according to post-COVID-19 vaccination status.

Adult patients who were unvaccinated at the time of COVID-19 diagnosis were followed at 1, 3, 6, and 9 months and categorized according to vaccination status. Symptom Tool (ST) and Impact Tool (IT) scores and SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibody levels were assessed longitudinally. A total of 59 patients (mean age 43.1±14.1 years; 45.8% male) were included, of whom eight were vaccinated.

The most frequently reported symptoms were memory problems, fatigue, brain fog, word-finding difficulties, and excessive sweating. Baseline characteristics were broadly comparable between groups.

ST and IT scores decreased significantly over time in the overall cohort; however, no statistically significant association between vaccination status and symptom trajectories was identified. SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibody levels were higher among vaccinated participants but were not associated with symptom burden.

Given the small sample size and substantial group imbalance, the study is underpowered and the findings should be interpreted cautiously. Larger prospective studies are needed to better clarify the relationship between post-COVID-19 vaccination and long COVID outcomes.

I remember seeing an advertisement for funding for researchers to investigate the potential benefits of vaccination, funded by a vaccine seller. I wonder if something like that accounts for these studies we are seeing that seem to shoehorn a vaccination analysis into their paper, sometimes, as here, almost as an after-thought.

Well, for a while there it was a thing to suggest that Covid vaccinations cured Long Covid (I think it was at about the same time as it was a thing to suggest that Covid vaccinations made Long Covid worse). Probably both ideas arose for the same reason - a vaccination is a challenge to the immune system.

But, it was certainly brave to think that following 59 people for 9 months after their covid-19 infection, only 8 of whom were subsequently vaccinated, would tell you anything much that was reliable about the effect of post-infection vaccination on Long Covid.

@Hutan, that must be it, or it makes no sense. Why you'd expect vaccinations received after the onset of the acute covid illness to have any effect on long term trajectory or symptoms?
At one point this was actually a hyped up “treatment” in post-COVID groups. Like many hyped up “treatments” it had a phase and now is rarely talked about anymore.
