Dear @weandmecfs, @MECFSResearch, @oeg_mecfs or any other ME/CFS-associated non-profit.

I am coordinating a research project at a university hospital to develop rapid, highly sensitive cell based diagnostics for functional GPCR autoantibodies and potentially to detect persistent viral infections by analyzing recirculating antigen-presenting cells (APCs).

Our immediate goal is to investigate the most likely cause of severe ME/CFS in a teenage girl who will serve as our first pilot patient.

Everyone involved is contributing their time voluntarily. However, we urgently need funding for a few specialized reagents to perform key experiments.

Would any of your organizations be willing to establish a dedicated donation account, with all funds used exclusively for this university-clinics-based project?

I would personally contribute the first €1,000, enough to get several important tests started.

Any support would be greatly appreciated (DMs open, email bruttel@toleris.com)

Any likes and RTs appreciated!

The persistent viral thing immediately sounds like a waste of time and money, repeating mistakes of the past rather than looking at things from a new angle. I also feel uneasy seeing a private startup using stories of one person in need to publicly call for money from charities in this way.

We will need private companies involved and we may need new technology. We will also need investment from private companies. Their approach seems unproven though so I can’t see what we would get out of any results here. And why they’re doing this publicly raises questions, why if not to try to get patients to fund them or join in the call to hand over funds? Maybe I’m being too cynical and misreading this. But their webpage is all about their new fancy biotech and looking for investors. Maybe that’s not going so well.

I’m not against private involvement. But private companies should seek money from private investors and markets, convince them of the value and possibility of their tech. Or are they also offering to hand over a share of their company and all future profits to WE&ME or MEResearch in exchange for this funding they need to get their biotech startup moving?

It contains gems such as:

Given the striking overlap in symptoms despite relatively few shared biomarkers, what could most plausibly explain the characteristic combination of post-exertional malaise (PEM), fatigue, dysautonomia, cognitive dysfunction, pain and other systemic symptoms in at least a large group of patients? One possibility is functional autoantibody-driven endothelial dysfunction (FADED).
