I came to this paper outside the forum. This is what I wrote about it:
"I think the article may add to the confusion, and I'm quite unclear as to what the author is actually saying. The author misses a crucial point that the nurses of the Royal Free largely lived together, faciliating the spread of an infectious disease. She also does not adequately separate the acute diseases from the aftermath. Ramsay originally applied the name ME to the acute illness, but later came to focus on the aftermath.
So, in using the ME/CFS name for the disease, we are moving away from the history of both ME and CFS to focus on the 'post' of 'post-infection'. It recognises that the phenomenon occurs after many infections. The author in this article starts adding (post) into some of her references to ME/CFS but without explaining why.
I don't think this article is helpful to our cause (increasing understanding of ME/CFS), and am inclined to think it should not be highlighted."
I agree that the author does not seem to know enough about the topic, bringing her own preconceptions to the topic. Edward Shorter gets a mention.
