    Gulf War Illness - causes

I was given ciprofloxacin for a bladder infection in 2010. I developed an issue with the tendons above my heel - I was hobbling and complaining about it well before I googled for side effects of the drug. The tendon problem did eventually come right. I felt bad on the drug and for some time...

USA: NIH National Institutes of Health news - latest ME/CFS webinar 14 Jan 2025

Walitt has had a key role in recent NIH research into ME/CFS. His published views about fibromyalgia, and the NIH inviting Edward Shorter, an ardent supporter of 'CFS is a psychosomatic illness' to brief them about the illness when a major ME/CFS study was beginning made many of use feel...

Dysregulated Provision of Oxidisable Substrates to the Mitochondria in ME/CFS Lymphoblasts, 2021, Missailidis et al

Yes, thank you very much for your work and commitment, and for taking the time to answer our questions so fully. Best wishes for the home straight of your PhD. Sounds as though you have some exciting studies under way.

What symptoms of ME that you personally experience is (a) not shown on your medical file and/or (b) not in the ME literature.

Good points @Samuel. It is very hard to know what should be attributed to ME, and what might be another illness entirely, and what might just be getting older. It's not helped by the fact that even really small, quite inconsequential things can help with a diagnosis of some conditions - like...

ME/CFS and gulf war illness patients exhibit increased humoral responses to herpesviruses-encoded dUTP, 2017, Halpin, Klimas, Fletcher, Ariza et al

Thanks Michiel. Those four graphs aren't very convincing, are they? There might be statistically significant differences, but there's so much overlap, that it's difficult to believe that levels of dUTPase antibodies are, on their own, the answer to the question of ME/CFS or GWI.

    Updated: What is ME? Video

I've included a link to the video, along with some other resources, in a list for Allied Health Professionals in my region. The video shows what ME/CFS is like very well, and doesn't take long to watch.

Fatigue - concepts for physiotherapy management and measurement, 2007, O'Connell and Stokes

One of the things that is interesting about this paper, is its view of chronic fatigue syndrome, and the suggestion that the condition didn't have a name for many years prior. There's a quote about the lack of attention fatigue has had, despite it being very debilitating. Which highlights...

Dysregulated Provision of Oxidisable Substrates to the Mitochondria in ME/CFS Lymphoblasts, 2021, Missailidis et al

Personally, I'm more than happy for DMissa to weigh in. I am very grateful to the Fisher team for their interest in ME/CFS; their papers are always well written and the studies are interesting. Yes, it feels as though the mitochondrial research is still quite new, with more understanding yet...

CONservative TReatment of Appendicitis in Children: a randomised controlled feasibility Trial (CONTRACT) , Hall, Crawley et al, 2021

She may be playing tricks, but with 'more participants having perforated appendicitis than anticipated', I expect this feasibility trial will be put to one side and there will be another roll of the dice for the main trial. Cheaper for the health system/insurers than an operation no doubt, but...

Characterization and Biomarker Analyses of Post-COVID-19 Complications and Neurological Manifestations, 2021, Sun et al

There wasn't much in the cytokine analysis, in terms of differentiating post-Covid participants with (nCov) and without (Cov) neurological symptoms. I thought the IgG levels measured was interesting - these are in confirmed cases of Covid-19, with some of them having no or very low antibodies...

Characterization and Biomarker Analyses of Post-COVID-19 Complications and Neurological Manifestations, 2021, Sun et al

The premise is really interesting. It seems that they can isolate particular extracellular vesicles using antibodies against a cell adhesion molecule that is expressed on neurons. I'm not quite sure if that means that the vesicles with the neuronal cell adhesion molecule have come from neuron...

Dysregulated Provision of Oxidisable Substrates to the Mitochondria in ME/CFS Lymphoblasts, 2021, Missailidis et al

Yes, I do remember that, and was convinced by it. But I have heard other Australian mitochondrial researchers be very dismissive of the idea of using lymphoblasts to investigate ME/CFS - they feel that the cells will be too different from cells taken fresh from the body. When I mentioned the...
