    Sleep trackers

Yup! Best sleep tracker is common sense; people usually know pretty well whether or not they're getting enough for their current needs.

ME Awareness Day / Week / Month, May 2021

Will still coincide with the start of DecodeME? I realise the ME awareness events take place worldwide, but in the UK it would be a good opportunity to mark the beginning of something really hopeful and positive.

    Opinions requested: strugglecare

The person suggesting it might be trying to be helpful, but appears to have little idea about ME. If it were me, I wouldn't waste any more energy on it. If it's someone important, you could perhaps respond with information about the reality of living with ME? I've found some of the stuff...

    Fingernail defects?

Terry's nails for decades, but can't remember whether present pre-ME, as it's 45 years ago. Do have vertical ridges, but they're normal by middle age. Psoriatic arthritis since 2012, but no skin disease or nail signs – opposite to mum, who had occasional mild skin psoriasis but no arthritis.

UK: Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) medical evidence

Likely they will accept them; also accept evidence from other sources, e.g. employer statement, OT assessment, etc. Advice from Fightback was assume they won't, and submit med records yourself. Even if they do contact, they may only allow a week for reply; GP may be too busy to respond in...

PEM: Swimming compared to other activities?

    1) Much less power/speed, slightly less endurance; 2) Less pain, less PEM for apparently more effort; 3) Only comparing against daily living, as unable to walk or cycle well enough to measure. No knowledge of physiology, but: 1) Prone/supine position during effort may have small effect; 2)...

    Lipomas, Dercums, Adiposa Dolorosa

That sounds like a really important step forward, @Binkie4 – it must be quite hard enough to live with these conditions, without the added insult of medics writing you off as 'just' overweight.

The possibility of autoimmunity or auto-reactivity in ME/CFS

Bafflingly fleeting enlargement, too; my neck glands will swell up until for as little as an hour, before subsiding again. A gift of Christmas mince pies last month reminded me that I can often trigger the swelling simply by eating sweet foods. Am not keeping up with posts very well because my...

George Monbiot on ME/CFS, PACE, BPS and Long Covid

It may not be written for the paper – he has a column, but he's not a full-time staffer. Though it would be good to get a well-written Guardian piece focusing on this issue for once! If he gets it right, it supports and informs Covid patients and throws a bit more public shade on those who've...

    Open Medicine Foundation (OMF)

It's bound to get sticky at times, when the de facto leader of an organisation has about as deep a personal interest in its mission as it's possible to have. Of course, no-one would criticise Ron Davis for being utterly driven to do the best he can for his son. Any parent would be. But it can...

UK - Resources for help getting food during quarantine and other supermarket related problems

So far, I haven't had any problems getting slots at Tesco, even though I'm not on the priority list. Fingers crossed! I have a delivery about every fortnight, and try to make sure that I book each one about three weeks ahead. I just add my saved shopping list to the basket to reserve the slot...

How to check if your N95/FFP3 mask is 'kosher'

Thanks for this, @JemPD. It's also good where possible to buy from reputable suppliers rather than sources such as eBay or Amazon, where it's hard to differentiate between people selling genuine and knockoff products. Just in case people aren't aware, there are medical supplies companies in...

News about Long Covid including its relationship to ME/CFS 2020 to 2021

If it's true that up to 10% of people face a long or very long recovery from Covid-19, the fact that the UK is heading rapidly towards reporting 60,000 new cases per day is terrifying. And that's only people who're symptomatic, or have enough reason to think they've been exposed that they come...

    Open Medicine Foundation (OMF)

Very true. We have to remember that, however prominent Ron and Janet are in their respective fields, the family still struggles to afford care. Whitney hasn't been able to contribute to pensions and build savings during what should have been some of the most productive earning years of his life...

Characterizing Long COVID in an International Cohort: 7 Months of Symptoms and Their Impact, 2020, Hannah Davis et al

Sort of! I've never known mental exertion cause physical symptoms, but sometimes physical exertion can cause even more profound mental PEM than it does physical PEM.

Pathogens Hijack Host Cell Metabolism: Intracellular Infection as a Driver of the Warburg Effect in Cancer and Other Chronic Inflammatory Conditions Amy D. Proal and Michael B. VanElzakker, 2021 This hypothesis piece discusses metabolic shift in a broad range of chronic conditions, but as it...

...millions of unconnected people who have nothing to gain, but everything to lose. Never mind. Poor dear's only trying to aggravate people because he knows he's history. Discredited history, at that.

Food Implications in Central Sensitization Syndromes, 2020, Aguilar-Aguilar

"Current indications show that dietary modifications may vastly improve the patients’ quality of life at a low cost." Stopped reading at that point! :bored:

    Nickel allergy?

So going back to the nickel allergy – I've just been pondering in the shower about what I'd do if I suspected nickel had got inside my washing up gloves and possibly triggered an allergic reaction. I can tolerate surgical tape on my skin for a while, so what I'd do is cut two small pieces of...

    Nickel allergy?

Oh, I only suggested it because many people have a jar of coconut oil in the cupboard anyway – I use it for frying my garlic, ginger and onions for curries. It's not expensive and keeps for ages.
