British Psychological Society: Development and promotion of valid psychological screening to predict chronicity, post COVID-19 infection, 2021

I have seen a suggestion that when the 1970's BPS model was created the US psychiatrists were in a "turf war" with social workers as to the right to provide psychotherapy independently without physician supervision. Apparently the social workers won. The discussion seemed to involve our old friends Imboden and Eisenberg.

Then President, Dr. John Imboden’s article was titled “Questions, Questions, and More Questions.” It asked, “What is really happening to American psychiatry today? Is it undergoing an identity crisis? Can psychotherapy be done by just anybody?” By the mid-1970's, social workers were pursuing the right to provide psychotherapy independently without physician supervision. Franklin Goldstein, J.D., became our lobbyist and Dr. Lex Smith chaired the legislative committee. Along with many committee members, they testified against legislation that would allow social workers to do psychotherapy without psychiatric supervision. The social workers persisted until gaining legislative victory.Maryland Psychiatric Society (recreationtherapy.com)

For years biopsychosocial practitioners have convinced themselves that it's only a small minority of patients who think they're a bunch of quacks. It's harsh stepping out of an ideological bubble and finding out that all along, the crowd was definitely screaming "BOOO!", and not "Boo-urns". Lots of good replies and the ME and LC community are really aligning well. Now all that's missing is healthy allies.

Also, may be an unofficial thing with not much backing, but it could just be backtracking and I guess that depends on how the vote goes:

Great work by those including @Brian Hughes who challenged this BS. Amazing the proposers thought they didn’t have to bother following the rules. By the way who is that guy in the video?

I was delighted to be part of this panel discussion on Gez Medinger‘s YouTube channel, RUN-DMC. As many readers will know, Gez is a London-based film producer and director who has been debilitated with severe Long COVID ever since contracting Covid early in the pandemic. His YouTube channel is now dedicated to medical journalism, where he produces films on all aspects of Long COVID and post-viral illness.

These films were prepared by Gez along with Asad Khan, a Respiratory Consultant from Manchester who also has Long COVID.

Do you feel the ground shifting? Very very small tremor, but it is shifting.

Not quite perfect but at least coming from a psychiatrist this is basically lèse-majesté against the BPS ideology and the totalitarian hold that belief in psychosomatic medicine has on the specialty:

(The quoted tweet is the BPS announcement tweet for this vote that was deleted)

I assumed it was Patrick Hill, the person who signed the write-up about the proposal. And it seems it is him:

I completed clinical training in 1987 and have over 30 years’ experience in applied Clinical Health Psychology, specialising in the management of chronic conditions. I have developed a number of multidisciplinary services providing support to people with long term health conditions, particularly chronic pain.

I have 25 years’ experience in medico-legal reporting and court work in the areas of personal injury, chronic pain and post-traumatic stress disorder. This work has been predominantly on behalf of the plaintiff and a small number of cases have been undertaken on behalf of the defendant as well as on a jointly instructed basis.

Bath, Bristol...
I held senior posts at Gloucestershire Royal NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust, where I was professionally responsible for teams of health psychologists engaged in clinical, organisational and research work.

Pain management, CBT...
From 2001 – 2008 I worked for a number of NHS national support teams, specialising in clinical governance and patient involvement. During this time, I held an honorary contract with North. Bristol NHS Foundation Trust as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist in the Pain Management Unit, where I maintained my clinical practice. I currently hold part time contracts with a number of NHS Pain and other clinical services.

As I have said many times before, the invention of health psychology as a profession focused on psychological treatments for people with chronic physical conditions seems to have been a huge mistake. No doubt a deliberate mistake. I can't think of anything they could usefully contribute

Has anyone captured the video and also the proposal, which has now been removed? And was there an official society explanation for what happened? The link now goes to nothing.

Is this really the derivation of it?
It's certainly a big part of it, from what I read:
https://careers.bps.org.uk/area/health
Health psychologists use their knowledge of psychology and health to promote general well-being and understand physical illness.

They are specially trained to help people deal with the psychological and emotional aspects of health and illness as well as supporting people who are chronically ill.

Health psychologists promote healthier lifestyles and try to find ways to encourage people to improve their health.

or example, they may help people to lose weight or stop smoking.

Health psychologist also use their skills to try to improve the healthcare system. For example, they may advise doctors about better ways to communicate with their patients.
