And an update (also sent as e-mail to donators)

Your generosity has helped me close in on my crowdfunding goal, with two weeks left to go. I plan to send everyone an individual thank-you note once the campaign is over. For now, I hope a group thanks will suffice!--David

@Trish--thanks for the explanation. I hadn't realized that about U.K. charities. I've contacted a few of last year's donors but haven't made that a priority. It's possible there might be another "matching" grant near the end. If I can exceed the goal like last year, that's also helpful. Berkeley takes a 7.5% cut (5% gift fee, 2.5% crowdfunding fee), which obviously reduces the amount in the end. I'll also have more travel expenses next year, and if I can be at a bit more than 50% time it will make it easier for me to spend less time doing other work unrelated to this. So the campaign will continue till April 30th along with all the Berkeley campaigns, and whatever is there is what's there. As long as I can reach the stated goal, I don't plan to do any more crowdfunding for this project unless I decide to continue after June 30th, 2019.

Yes, this is very true. The UK charities have taken a bit of a bashing recently, and in my opinion justifiably so in some cases, with their persistent-bordering-on-heavy approach to fund raising. Given how very competitive the charity 'market' is, I'm pretty sure some of the bigger charities have likely employed some hard hitting commercial marketing agencies, with the inevitable result; brinkmanship charity marketing strategies, that have in fact tipped over the brink. Just my own personal conjecture though.

If anyone felt inclined, maybe it would be a good idea to send a link to Dave's crowd funding page to your local ME charity, saying you just wanted to let them know this is going on in case they or their members wished to donate, the more who know the better.

I was checking my card statement and spotted that my donation worked out as quite a lot less in £ quids than expected as I was t aware of the exchange rate getting a bit more favourable. So I will be pinging another one through before the end too

It's a pity that the map only shows the United States, there are so many donations from all over the world! Anyway, only $176 to 78%:)

You've inspired me to check my actual conversion rates @NelliePledge :brb:

ETA: Ha! I'll need to scale up my second installment, turns out I'm almost 20% below what I thought I had spent:D And yay! 78%!

if you type 'usd to ...' and add your local currency instead of the dots most search engines, it will tell you the exchange rate. There is usually a little box for you to add exact amounts too. Exchange the order to see the reverse calculation.

    usd to gbp for pounds.
