Miranda Hart - British comedian

Alex Howard (Optimum Health Clinic, which Miranda went to and name checks) now has a PhD from the Department of Psychology, University of Greater Manchester. The actual subject of his PhD appears to be himself, how he developed the Optimum Health Clinic, how he has 'contributed to knowledge' by developing Therapeutic Coaching (TC), and how he goes about reaching large numbers (millions) of people.

Fuller post on this, and the Abstract on the thread below

As a sidenote I just looked up the University of Greater Manchester as I hadn't heard of it before (and know all the UK unis believe it or not, at least to be familiar with), so even I had to check it wasn't a miswriting of, unknown alternative college for one of the Manchester unis etc .

The University of Bolton rebranded in 2024 to become the UNiversity of Greater Manchester

and apparently there were objections from a number of institutions including University of Manchester and MMU/Manchester Met. I can understand why as particularly if someone is going to study in-person, it isn't something easily rectifiable at a later stage (given how application processes have deadlines) when they are invited and realise the different geographical location and all the logistics related to that etc. and it could be someone international or from a part of the country they aren't aware of the term 'greater' etc.

She appeared on This Morning today following her recent involvement with Traitors. Her 9 min clip interview which at the end she describes herself as having suffered 10 years with ME/CFS caused by Lyme Disease.

So yeah, PR, as she says her book sales have ticked up since Traitors.

Never ending PR - 'Come on body push through you'll be fine. Lyme disease, forget it', she joked.'

Another Daily Mail article, to talk about the This Morning TV interview this morning (29/10/2026)

'Speaking about the progress she has made since being told she has ME, Miranda said: 'I didn't think I'd walk around my park at one point, I couldn't leave the house or get out of bed.

When asked if she was nervous before coming back to TV, Miranda told them: 'The excitement took over because it's stuff that I love.'

Sian questioned whether the show got her out of bed, and Miranda said: 'In a way but I didn't go from bed bound to that.'

'Come on body push through you'll be fine. Lyme disease, forget it', she joked.'

I think in fairness her joke about “push through, Lyme - forget it” was because the presenter (didn’t seem to know much) thought she was bedbound but leapt up and out at the offer of Traitors, she was making a joke that it wasn’t like that.

ETA - from the article
Sian questioned whether the show got her out of bed, and Miranda said: ‘In a way but I didn’t go from bed bound to that.’
‘Come on body push through you’ll be fine. Lyme disease, forget it’, she joked.
‘No there was a bit of progress, but it was a crossover of a boarding school outward bound or a murder mystery weekend. And fine, I’m all in! “But my body was a bit shocked.’

I think she’s changed her tune a bit from the book launch, the “living well with fatigue” seems to be replacing the “cured myself” narrative.

Was the book really 2 years ago! Seems like lots of time to realise it wasn’t a great idea after all…

I saw a very short clip where she said that what helped her get better was going out in the garden.

I think she means well, but this statement is so harmful.

I can’t recall all the times my mother in law and doctors and other well-meaning people have told me I’d get better if only I’d go out and walk. It is a terrible misconception that causes so much harm.

After almost 17 years with this disease, I have to say this one more time so that even the people in the back can hear it:

When you have ME/CFS, you don’t get better if you exert yourself. You can start to exert yourself, when you get better. Why some get better is not known, but it is not a matter of will or motivation or fresh air.

I wish Miranda well, and hope she doesn't crash after her exertions on the Traitors. She clearly enjoyed it which was nice to see. I don't think we can expect her to be completely up to date on ME/CFS, and advocacy, she's just telling her story as she has experienced it, and is clearly sympathetic with other people with ME/CFS.

She’s put herself in a pickle (the usual celeb brain train trap) she felt a bit better, got hooked in by a brain trainer, they convinced her she could think herself better, it seemed to work.
She declared to the world that she’s better. Turns out she was just doing a bit better and is not properly cured.
Now she’s having to accept she’s an ill person with positive thoughts.

My dad absolutely worships being outside, especially in the sunshine, and spends a huge amount of his free time outdoors gardening and the like.

When I first became severe before I understood my limitations are used to go outside and sit on a deck chair once or twice a week for an hour or so. My dad doesn't really understand why I don't do that anymore. He doesn't understand that it made me crash. He thinks it would make me feel better.Although he's learnt to stop saying it , he's still hints at it all the time.

Many people really like Miranda Hart (including my partners mum), and will read statements like this and conclude similarly that people need to be getting outside. It is almost impossible for most people to understand that sitting outside on a deck chair in the sunshine resting could make someone, however ill, actually iller.

So it's quite dangerous for her to go around saying things like that.
