EU: News from the European ME Coalition (EMEC)

The ME/CFS pledge for the European elections
We, at the European ME Coalition (EMEC) call upon candidates in the European elections to commit to supporting individuals suffering from Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) by endorsing our pledge. Those who have signed the pledge or actively supported the ME/CFS community in Europe in the past will be listed below on this website. We encourage EU voters to support these candidates in the upcoming elections from 6-9 June 2024.

Important update from the European ME Coalition:

The results of the Horizon Europe call on high-burden, under-researched conditions have been made public. 3 (out of 4?) projects from the call have already been announced, receiving approximately 7 million each. They focus on endometriosis, familial hypercholesterolemia, and difficult-to-treat rheumatoid arthritis. While endometriosis fits the definition of a high-burden, under-researched condition, the other two are questionable…

EMEC was involved in a major consortium that included top ME/CFS experts across Europe. This was a professional and high-quality application that received an excellent review score which unfortunately wasn’t enough to get funding.

12) It turns out that there were more than 100 applications to this call and the 4 that received funding had a near perfect score of 14.5 out of 15 points.

14) We will express these concerns to the new Commissioner. More than 4 years after the ME/CFS resolution, not a single research project with a dedicated focus on ME/CFS has been funded.

I posted an article about Pascal Arimont's parliamentary question to the new Commissioner in the EU thread. The question was submitted at the end of last year, so I'm not sure if this was asked independently of EMEC's efforts or is the same thing. Here is the link to the other post:

1) Important news: there is now a much greater chance than ever before for #MECFS scientists to obtain funding from #HorizonEurope.

2) For the #HorizonEurope call Tackling high-burden for patients and under-researched medical conditions (HORIZON-HLTH-2025-01-DISEASE-07) the Commission has created a new selection procedure (explained in the screenshot below).

3) This means that the highest rated application in the area of #MECFS will be funded on the condition that it attains a thresholds of 4 or more for Excellence, Impact, and Implementation with a cumulative threshold of 12.

4) By using this approach, high quality #MECFS research proposals will not be competing with those in other medical areas. This new approach means that one #MECFS research project will be funded with certainty if the threshold is reached.

5) This is as close as we can get to ring-fenced funding for #MECFS at the European level. We hope #MECFS researchers will seize the opportunity and submit multiple strong applications.

6) Deadline date: 16 September 2025 17:00:00 Brussels time

Congrats to everyone who made this possible!

Hopefully we see some high quality applications from Europe. Maybe Rob Wüst would like to do something ambitious? Maybe this is a chance to do a high quality replication attempt of WASF3?
